HAPPY PRIDE

Happy Pride to all my LGBTQIA+ friends! ️🌈💖️⚧️

To my straight friends & followers, my lovely allies. Now is the time that I ask, what do YOU do to ensure you’re being an ally?

Does your allyship extend to ALL those that fall under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella? If it doesn’t, please ask yourself why? Educate yourself, ask questions, get informed because allyship shouldn’t be selective.

Are you actively calling out homophobia, transphobia, biphobia etc when you see or hear it? If you’re not, ask yourself why not? If it makes you feel uncomfortable or that you might be perceived as part of the LGBT+ community for challenging it, imagine how it feels for us.

This includes micro aggressions or “banter”, things left unchecked get out of hand and become normalised.

When voting do you look at politicians who are protecting EVERYONE, even those who are different from yourself? Or are you turning a blind eye and voting for those trying to strip away at our most basic of rights? Maybe you believe it just won’t happen or that it doesn’t matter because it won’t affect you?

When you enter our spaces, are you respectful, a guest, mindful of your actions or words or are you treating it like a zoo, a novelty to gawk at? Do you try to make yourself the centre of attention? Does it upset you if someone of the same gender flirts with you? Does someone asking for your pronouns bother you? Ask yourself why?

If you enjoy our media “omg I love RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Alan Carr and Graham Norton are just so funny!” But you find watching 2 men kissing weird or seeing 2 women holding hands makes you uncomfortable or find a character using they/them pronouns as being too in your face. Ask yourself why?

So Happy Pride to my LGBTQIA+ friends and followers! Have fun, celebrate and be proud of who you are, and to my allies, we need you to really show up for ALL of us! NOT just during pride month, but every month. Don’t let it be performative.
