Ribbons of Remembrance
MiniMaxxie went to Crossbones Graveyard, a former post-medieval paupers’ burial ground holding the remains of an estimated 15,000 paupers, more than half of them children, who lived, worked and died in what was once an impoverished & notoriously lawless part of London. There is a widely held belief that it was originally unconsecrated ground used for the burial of sex workers. These women were also known locally as “Winchester Geese” because they were licensed by the Bishop of Winchester to work within the Liberty of the Clink, an area outside the jurisdiction of the City of London.
It is now a Remembrance garden, designed to respect the outcast dead who are buried beneath. It provides a sensitive, contemplative environment for all who would spend time here.
