Northern Bear Spider (Arctosa cinerea) 1 of 5
It may be tough on the northern side of the north-south divide in terms of weather, economic disadvantage and lack of infrastructure, but there is one thing up north that we soft southerners are sorely lacking - this wonderful large grey beast of a wolf spider, the Northern Bear Spider - a Lycosid spider with a legspan getting on for three inches that inhabits shingle/gravel river banks and is not found anywhere in the south of England, though it does make it into south Wales. This was one of 6 I found on one shingle bar on the river Wear in County Durham.
