In 1970 a small group of concerned Cape May citizens banded together with the express purpose of rescuing the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, an 18-room Stick-style mansion, from demolition. This group became known as the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC). In 2009, “& Humanities” was added to the name, to better express the organization’s breadth of cultural programming. On March 27, 2020, MAC announced a new name and new brand: Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture).

Today, Cape May MAC is known as an organization with an unwavering dedication to promoting Cape May by interpreting its history, supporting cultural and heritage tourism, restoring and preserving vital historical landmarks, partnering with local business and non-profits and educating a largely underserved population of students.

With a membership of more than 3,200, a paid staff of 160 and some 300 volunteers, Cape May MAC offers a year-round calendar of tours and special events that serves more than 300,000 people each year. Through its creative cultural and heritage tourism offerings, Cape May MAC has helped transform Cape May from a "summer only" beach resort to the country's leading Victorian theme destination.
