As the children suspected, not only was the magic becoming increasingly more unstable, but the amounts they had been able to mine from the rock seemed to be dwindling. Measures would have to be taken as the Elfkin depending on the magic looked towards alternative means of production.
The Mayor explained that there was a machine that could extract magic directly from the Bell, and the children's unique skill of sniffing out magic would no longer be needed.
Outcries of fear and anger echoed in the caverns as it sounded like the Sniffer Moles would be left without a purpose and out of a job. How would they be able to afford their next worm sausage?
In an attempt to address their fears, the Mayor promised the children would not be without work. It was only that what role they were to play in the extraction of the magic was going to have to change. A company had been hired to build this new machine, and they would be bringing in consultants to help with the transition of the children into their new jobs.
But first, they were going to have to be re-educated...
