Happy Ending to a Disaster
This night was supposed to be a chill evening when a few of us planned to make breakfast dinner - i.e. pancakes, omelettes, scrambled eggs, bacon, crepe, tater tots... As easy as it sounds, dinner didn't turn out to be very successful.
Disaster started when Mike insisted that we deep fry, not pan fry or bake, the tater tots. So I started to preheat half a saucepan of oil to deep fry them, but I moved on to the bacon, thinking that the oil would take a long while to heat up.
The next thing we knew, the oil started to boil (as we discovered later on, it was at least 185'C), so we took the pan off the hot stove top (we have an electric stove), and placed it on a cool one. Mike thought that the oil wasn't cooling fast enough, so he opened the lid and the oil started to smoke vigorously. Before we realized what was going on, WOOF, the oil bursted into flames. It was insanely scary, as the flames were so high, I thought they were going to reach the cabinets and burn down the whole building.
As some of us ran around opening windows and turning on fans, Bo and Mike placed the flaming pot of oil onto the kitchen floor, and extinguished the fire with a lot of baking soda. By that time, the smoke had already spread out throughout the apartment, triggering the smoke detector, and we had to run outside because the smoke was suffocating.
We took the pot outside, and opened the lid to let the oil cool, but it started to light up again, so we used a fire extinguisher.... and it turned out not to be a carbon dioxide extinguisher (as we hoped it would be), but had some stinky white powder, and made us cough more rigorously in addition to the discomfort from inhaling the smoke. I guess the whole process shortened our lives by 2 years....
So this is a picture of the pot after we used the fire extinguisher. All of that powder is still outside our door right now.
