Ashton House, West Bank

Ashton House is at the bottom of West Bank opposite the entrance to St. John the Baptist Church and is one of my favourite Winster buildings.

There is a photograph of the facade elsewhere on this site for you to enjoy.

During my childhood in 1950s Winster Ashton House was occupied by two Heathcote brothers - earlier in the c20 it was a shop. I had always longed to step inside Ashton House to see if the layout of the interior complemented the facade. Alas this never came to pass until......

On 26th September 2011 I passed Ashton House and noticed that a man (Martin) was busy painting a downstairs window and the front door was ajar. I could not resist the temptation to engage him in conversation. After I had introduced myself I told him of my childhood romance with the building and that I was pleased to see that it was being restored, He kindly gave me a tour of the building and allowed me to take some photographs and readily agreed to my posting them on this Flickr site. My grateful thanks are due to Martin for allowing me to record the condition of Ashton House at the start of restoring it to its former glory.

I like fireplaces - this one has an art-deco style - I wonder if it will survive the modernisation?
