Fading slowly

On the way back to Hancock I swung by the small yard at Nestoria for a quick look around in the fading light to see if anything had changed, it hadn't. A string of Milwaukee Road boxcars was still stationed there for braking duties as needed. The cars are equipped with cast iron shoes and provide additional braking for long trains descending the tortuous L'Anse Hill. Modern cars have composite shoes which can fade over the long sustained descent whereas the iron shoes build heat and retain it.
