USS Tunny SSG 232_1953 - 1960
The first submarines with missile launch capability were modified diesel boats. They carried missile storage compartments on their decks that could hold 2 missiles, and a launching ramp further aft. The designation of these boats was changed from “SS” to “SSG” after modification. This profile drawing shows the USS Tunny SSG 282, a Gato Class diesel sub with a Regulus I missile on the launch ramp. She was configured this way from 1953 to 1960. She was later used for troop transport, before decommissioning in 1969. The ship’s slogan is one of my favorites, “Illegitimi Non Carborundum,” “Don’t Let the Bastards Wear You Down!”
