Chilean Aviation Peacekeepers prepare to depart Haiti

Chilean Aviation Peacekeepers prepare to depart Haiti in accordance with the Security Council’s decision to close the mission October 15, 2017 after 13 years in the Caribbean country.

By that date, the Mission’s military component will withdraw and there will be reductions both of police personnel as well as civilian tasks. The Council’s decision was taken in recognition of the progress achieved in Haiti’s stabilization, including the peaceful completion of the electoral process and the return to constitutional order with the inauguration of the 58th President of the Republic of Haiti on 7 February 2017.

Security Council resolution 2350, adopted unanimously, also provides for the establishment of a smaller follow-on Mission, the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH). The mandate of MINUJUSTH will focus on rule of law, police development and human rights as well as good offices and advocacy roles in order to support the Government of Haiti in consolidating the stabilization gains and ensuring their sustainability.

MINUJUSTH will be established for an initial period of six months from 16 October 2017 to 15 April 2018. The new Mission shall be composed of up to seven Formed Police Units deployed in five departments as well as 295 Individual Police Officers. The reduced Police component will assist the Haitian National Police (HNP) to safeguard the security gains of the past years and provide operational support to the HNP in implementing its 2017/21 Strategic Development Plan.
