UNMISS assists in plane crash search and recovery operation in Juba

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan provides support to the Government of South Sudan in the search and recovery operation surrounding a civilian cargo plane on 5 November, 2015. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Juba International Airport on 4 November, with reports claiming upwards of forty lives lost and only one survivor, an infant.

The goal of the operation was to locate and extract any existent human remains, as well as to extract mechanical remains and, if possible, the aircraft’s data recorder, to assist in the investigation into the cause of the crash.

The UNMISS component was coordinated by the Joint Operation Center, which assigned tasks to different sections. SMLO (Military Liaison) coordinated initial liaison upon arrival; BANFMU (Bangladeshi Riverine Unit) provided a diving team to search for remains in the waters surrounding the crash; JFDFHMEC (Japanese Engineering) provided winching equipment and personnel to move large pieces of wreckage; Fire and Rescue provided support and onsite fire abatement if necessary; CMO (Medical Office) provided a medical team to assist in medical emergencies and with collecting any human remains; MSC (Mission Support) provided fuel and lifejackets.
