Principal's and Administrative Offices

In the principal's and administrative offices of the Chestnut Junior High School, a pirate-themed mural painted by former students of the public school dominated a series of small offices.

The 1901 Classical Revival Chestnut Street Public School in Springfield, Massachusetts had a century-long history as a public education facility. It finally closed in 2004 after being cited for 691 code violations. By 2007 a Puerto Rico based developer was selected by the city to rehabilitate the building into market rate apartments. The 2008 housing crisis and recession quashed those plans. When this photo was taken in August of 2012, the school was in decent shape and certainly salvagable as a redevelopment project. Unfortunately, the entire school succumbed to a suspicious fire in September of 2013. The 82,000 square foot building was demolished and is now an empty lot.
