Variable Checkerspot caterpillar exuviae with webbing

Here is an exuviae -- the shed skin after a molt -- for a caterpillar of a Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterfly on a leaves of Southern Bush Monkeyflower (Diplacus longiflorus) in the woods a couple of days ago. I suspect that the caterpillar makes the webbing to aid in getting his skin off. (San Marcos Pass, 26 May 2025)
