Webbing on an oak leaf - caterpillar not spider
This is webbing on a leaf of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia, Fagaceae) in the woods, but I don't think it's the work of a spider. I believe it's the same little caterpillar (Lepidoptera) that I show in this photo - at least they both skeletonize the leaf in the same way, like a waffle. (Look under that thick white webbing to the left of center.) We seem to have a number of critters that skeletonize the oak leaves, see this photo and this photo where the agent appears to be a fungus. Happy Web Webnesday! (San Marcos Pass, 14 November 2017)
