Against the Sky - TNY03445
Here is a common long-jawed orb weaver (Tetragnatha extensa) munching on a mosquito or possibly gnat.
The spider sat on the underside of its web across a small ditch and I noticed some small flying bugs so waved at them and one flew into the web and became lunch.
For this shot, I held the camera underneath the web and shot blindly upwards. It was taken back in 2005 using a Sony DSC-P120 supercompact so it wasn't like I was holding my comparatively huge macro rig under there. :)
The small sensor of the supercompact has the benefit here of having a much greater depth of field which is why the trees became such a nice background.
I bet the spider was a bit confused by the multitude of flashes from a close distance as I was shooting though.
For another shot of the same spider, but trying to hide, please have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/9618712686/
