Cylindrical for a Reason - _TNY_1471

For this one, I had to switch on the high magnification. I was having coffee on the patio at my mom's summer house in Värmdö, Sweden in late May when I noticed something very small walking across the table.

I saw it was a minute beetle so I picked up an old acorn off the ground and placed the beetle on it before setting the lens to 4.3:1§ magnification.

This is a female pear blight beetle (Anisandrus dispar), also known as the European shothole borer as they have made their way to North America as well.

These beetles excavate short galleries in the trunks of suitable trees and actually cultivate a symbiotic fungi in them which they feed on.

Females like this are 3-3.5 mm (.13") long while the more rounded males are only around 2 mm (.08").
