Gold Face on Butt - _TNY_7259

This small spider with the fantastic gold colour doesn't have a common English name but the scientific name is Callilepis nocturna. In Swedish though, it is known as "guldspindel" - simply meaning "gold spider".

 

The Germans and Dutch instead focus on it's feeding habits and call it "Ameisendieb" and "mierendief" respectively - both meaning "ant thief". This name comes from the fact that the spider preys on ants like the black garden ants (Lasius sp.).
