A mating pair of ruddy darters (Sympetrum sanguineum) - the red one is the male and the more yellow one is the female.
The English word "ruddy" basically means "reddish", which corresponds with the scientific name "sanguineum", meaning blood-coloured. It is even more literal in various other countries' vernacular names, like in Swedish, Norwegian, German, Dutch and Danish.
This couple were having a moment on a tree stump by the Nedre Dammen pond in Åva-Stensjödal in Tyresta National Park just south of Stockholm, Sweden in late August.
