I'm still getting used to shooting macro with the Sigma 180mm Macro lens, but now that I've added a teleconverter it gets even more interesting. The TC has the peculiar effect of not only turning it into a 360 mm lens, but also increasing the max magnification from 1:1 to 2:1 - without doubling the minimum focusing distance!
This means that it is a really useful tool for shooting more easily scared subjects since you don't have to get ultra close.
The drawback is that it is a quite heavy setup. My Canon 5Ds, the 180 mm, the teleconverter plus flash and diffuser weigh in at almost 3 kg (6.6 lbs in freedom units).
The subject here is a male v-fronted jumper (Aelurillus v-insignitus) which posed nicely (but briefly) for me. Unfortunately, there was a leaf in the foreground here which with the extreme compression of the long lens led to the entire shot being covered in a weird green hue from the severly out of focus leaf.
I really like how Mr. Jumper looks straight into the camera here so I've messed with the shot in Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshot and think I 've gotten rid of the green, but now I wish I had used a slightly smaller aperture to also have the pedipalps in focus. Also, the diffuser would benefit from being much larger when shooting further away like this.
