Family Winter Tradition - _TNY_1497

Have you ever heard a buzzing spider? And by that, I really mean "heard" - not "heard about".

The thing is that the males (like the one here) attract females in spring by drumming their feet on dry leaves, creating a buzzing sound which the ladies apparently find very sexy or something.

Where I live (Stockholm, Sweden) we have a little Christmans tradition going. For several years, me or my wife have discovered male buzzing spiders (Anyphaena accentuata) in our house in late December.

This one was hanging out in the bathroom when my wife was taking a shower on Jan 1st and I put it on a black door mat for a more interesting background.

Here is our 2017 discovery (Dec 20th): www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/24784205547/

and here is the 2018 one (Dec 30th): www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/31895050057/ and www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/49268471957/ and www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/48632161987/

I found a female during the summer of 2022 and as you can see, she ended up on the same mat as the guy peeping on my wife: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/52350626984/
