If you see a damselfly or dragonfly flying near you, just holding out your hand is actually a perfectly viable way to get them to land. They like outcrops as perches and many immediately take the chance to have a good vantage point of their domains.
I tried this with this male beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) who was chasing away another male over a creek in Åva-Stensjödal in Tyresta National Park, south of Stockholm, Sweden, and it worked perfectly.
