My Best Eye Shot Ever - _TNY_3452 (In Explore 25/5 2022)

As I was going inside to fetch a pot of coffee at my mom's summer house in mid-July, I saw that someone was stuck inside the glass of the kitchen window.

To my delight it was this robber fly which I immediately recognised as a Choerades - one of my favorite genus of asilids! Those distinct yellos halteres (the little chicken drumsticks under the wings) are a great tell.

After running for my camera, I got several nice shots with the MP-E65mm with this one being the one I am most pleased with. Also, every time the fly tried to end the session the window came to my aid.

As for the exact species, this is almost certainly a Choerades marginata with a very small chance of being a C. femorata instead. Gorgeous compound eyes on it with a nice hint of purple either way.

Here's another shot of the fly, showing it more from the side: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51385827040/
