Claudia Jones-Growing Green
Students who are cognitively impaired focus on a curriculum that is functional and community-based. Much emphasis is placed on daily living skills so that they may contribute to society to the greatest extent possible. The Growing Green Garden will allow students to design, create and maintain a garden right on campus as part of their education. They will put theory (what they're learning in class) into practice as they use many skills to complete this project. Students will learn where food comes from, practical math skills as they will use the fruits/vegetables to prepare meals. They will use measurement skills. They will learn responsibility, job and life skills as a result of this project. This will bring them closer to nature, and allow them to interact with each other in a socially meaningful and physically productive way. Students will also feel part of the mainstream because their garden will be positioned for the entire school to see.
