Community Building & Fire Station - Hastings, IA

The town's fire station is housed in the right-hand side of this WPA project building, which was completed in 1937.

As you can see, rain clouds were building quickly to the west and this was my last photo for the day. I had planned to shoot some things in nearby Malvern but I'll have to save that for another day.

My dad worked at a natural gas compressor station just northeast of Hastings, and he and "the boys" would come to the bar in Hastings for lunch or a quick beer or two after work. The bar was owned by an older lady whose name escapes me (Vera?). She ran the place by herself most of the time (I think she had a helper on Friday and Saturday nights). She would stay open until she was tired and ready to go home, at which time she would just shoo everyone out and lock the door. Both she and the bar are long gone but I remember going in there with my dad a time or two.
