Palais Royale Building

The Palais Royale Building in South Bend, IN (1922). It was developed by the Palais Theatre Corporation. The building was placed in federal receivership during the Great Depression. In 1935, it was the site of a bombing that damaged the ground floor. In the late 1930s, it became a popular spot for big band artists such as Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington. In 1940, a large gala was held for the premiere of Knute Rockne, All American, which was filmed at nearby Notre Dame. The Palais Royale became a Service Men's Center during World War II.
