Zakynthos or Zante (from Venetian) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the third largest of the Ionian Islands. Zakynthos is a separate regional unit of the Ionian Islands region, and its only municipality. It covers an area of 410 km2 (158 sq mi) and its coastline is roughly 123 km (76 mi) in length. The island is named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin. Zakynthos has a thriving tourism industry.

Navagio Beach (Greek: Ναυάγιο), or Shipwreck Beach, is an exposed cove, sometimes referred to as "Smugglers Cove", on the coast of Zakynthos, in the Ionian Islands of Greece. Navagio Beach was originally known as Agios Georgios. On 2 October 1980, a freightliner, the MV Panagiotis, ran aground in the waters around Zakynthos Island on Navagio Beach during stormy weather and bad visibility. It has been rumored the ship was smuggling contraband such as cigarettes, wine and women. The ship was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach that now bears the nickname Shipwreck.

This is a photo of the Blue Caves in Zakynthos. One of the most visited Greek Isles. What a spectacular view and the color of the water is just amazing!

By boat from Agios Nikolaos, you can visit the famous blue caves in the north of the island. The blue caves are among the most famous sights of the island with an amazing beautiful color of the water, the largest of the caves is the cyanon cave.

Vacation in Greece, Zakynthos 1995. Hat and tshirt is important in the sun.

Warm and rough road down to Zakynthos town. Cars, how do they even manage to travel on these thin streets.

This ship is rather elderly now. Built in 1973, Zakinthos I is now 40 years of age. She's just recently been repainted and entered service this year with Ionian Ferries.

She's seen here moored up in Zakynthos harbour. The ship weighs 2,157 tonnes and is the smallest and oldest in their fleet. She can carry 850 passengers at a speed of 16 knots.

This photo was taken from the moving Ionian Star in almost pitch black, so I was pleased it turned out alright.
