Using the Subie as bait to draw the local sand serpents. This guy is pretty cool.

I spent the second-to-last day of my Christmas break at Ridgefield, arriving before sunrise and leaving after sunset. The bald eagles had been pretty active and the sunny day brought out many visitors to admire them, so late in the afternoon I parked a ways away so I could watch the day end in a more peaceful and relaxed state. When I saw the setting sun cast a shadow of my little Subaru on a frozen Rest Lake, I couldn't resist a self-portrait as an homage to a picture I had taken almost exactly a year earlier (but around the bend and at sunrise instead of sunset).

But it was even more of a nod to the recurring nightmare I used to have, of me visiting Ridgefield and driving my car into the lake, as the angle of the sun made the the car look like it was submerged. Thankfully I haven't had the dream in a while so I was in a rather whimsical mood when I took the picture.

The white birds on the distant part of the lake are tundra swans, most are sitting on the ice, but there was a small section of open water where a large number of ducks and geese had concentrated. This is also one of the last places I photographed coyotes (these pictures from January 2012 were taken near this spot).

So into week three of ownership and the car now has 1056 miles. This was a shot of my first trip into the Santa Rosa mountains. The car handled the deeply rutted 4x4 roads well, but we eventually got to a rock path with some really sharp rocks that I bypassed since I do not have any skid plates installed yet. I will head back once I have more undercarriage protection and maybe some rock sliders under the rockers.

Well, I needed a replacement for camping duties and this seemed to fit the bill. New Subaru XV Crosstrek with 6 miles that will soon be "configured" to do better as a camping vehicle.

Well, 2 weeks down and I have 836 miles on the car at the end of week 2. The Subaru cross bars and cargo rack both came in, and they have been assembled and installed. I have found the car is doing great on dirt roads, gravel and surprisingly, this thing loves soft sand. I have yet to get her stuck.

Yesterday I posted a photo of my friend's 2014 FJ Cruiser. I figured I better post a photo of my own car for good measure. This is my 2014 Subaru XV CrossTrek Sport 5-Speed manual. A great outdoors car. Absolutely love it. Now that I work very close to where I live, it has been retired as a commuter and will be the "weekend warrior" car. Taken with my iPhone a few months ago.

Our winters here in Portland are generally mild, but this fall has packed a bit of a punch at the end. We got a little bit of snow on Thursday a week and a half ago, and thankfully since I have some flexibility with vacation time right now, I was able to take the day off and let our dog Ellie enjoy the snow. But then as so often happens in Portland, we got some freezing rain and suddenly everything is coated in ice and trees and branches started falling all around our old neighborhood. We lost power a few times on Friday but never for too long. While walking Ellie I noticed a tree had fallen on a lovely old Mercedes a couple of streets over, completely crushing the back.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning while we were asleep the power kicked off and we didn't get it back until that evening. Sadly the house was at its coolest when we lost power since we let it cool down at night, so I piled on extra layers and a hat until we had heat again. The house never got that cold so we weren't exactly suffering, it was only down to 57 when the electricity returned.

This past week we got more snow, not very much but it arrived right before the evening rush hour and made a mess of everything. Fortunately I had also taken that day off but my wife wasn't so lucky, since the train she was going to take home got shut down when some switches froze, she ended up spending the night at work. It's going to warm tomorrow and the remaining ice should be gone, which will make a certain dog (and her walker) very happy, even if it takes the snow with it.

That's enough winter weather for me this year, and winter hasn't officially started yet!

Before taking Ellie on her morning walk, I snapped this picture from our top steps of the snow that had fallen overnight, an unusual sight in Portland. The sun was rising, not that I could tell, clouds covered the skies and the snow was still falling.

Our new Subaru XV Crosstrek looks better in bright sunlight.

I purchased the Aeronaut 45 from Tom Bihn (the Aubergine bag in the middle) to be my main travel bag and it got its inaugural trip with my visit to the Olympic peninsula in April. It excels at carry-on airplane travel but it did just great on the car trip too. I'm pretty happy with my current bag lineup but both the Tom Bihn ID that carries my computer and my Tamrac camera bag may be approaching the end of their active lives after one or two decades of heavy use.

The crew re-united a couple of months later for a trip to the Redwoods, then just the Aeronaut, ID, and the little Domke camera bag joined me on my first flight in years, and my first with only carry-on.

Coronado Lifeguards have the new Subaru XV Crosstrek. Pretty cool (even if it does have a CVT).

Yesterday my wife decided it was time to replace her aging car, so today we went down to the Subaru dealer and brought home this lovely XV Crosstrek. It will be a good match to my car, which not coincidentally is also a Crosstrek. You might say we're very fond of these little Subarus.

I took this picture on Christmas afternoon of 2012 after taking my new Subaru to the refuge for the first time. It poured in the morning as I drove out in the dark so I was pleased to find the Crosstrek much more composed in the heavy rain than my previous car. I've had it just over a year now and am still in love with it. I was going to take a similar picture this Christmas vacation after returning to the refuge after a long absence, but they moved the sign a bit further up the road.
