Stopped here long enough for 1 ciggy. After 9½ hours on the train your bum gets a bit sore - at least its easy to get up and walk around.
On the way back I took a lot more photo's of stations we stopped at, a few video's out the window to show changing terrain and some train interior pics. You'll have to wait for those though haha.
3 car "Xplorer" self-propelled diesel train accelerates towards the pedestrian crossing at Exeter, seconds after cresting the highest point on the line between Sydney and Goulburn. It is working SP33 down Canberra Xplorer.
Re the title - some unkind souls gave Xplorers the nickname "Xploders".
Partially hidden behind the wild, unkept shrubbery of the modern-day Orange Yard, the Central West Xplorer pauses at the station. The 3 car set (2501/2528) is deputising for the usual XPT to Dubbo.
Volvo B7RLE / Wright B44F new 10/2009 , one of a batch of 14 new at Wells , arriving in Wells bus station from Bath on service 174.
It was repainted in Mendip Xplorer livery in October 2016. Once again Wells has 14 of these Eclipse IIs , but 69457 / 8 new to Bristol have replaced 69435 / 6 which went to Leicester.
SP32, the Canberra to Sydney service worked by 3-car Xplorer railcar set, rounds Werai curve on an overcast and cool summer morning. Typical southern highlands weather!
Departing Tamworth, the Xplorer train from Sydney to Armidale, with apparently, the two cars which usually run to Moree in addition to the usual three. May 2013.

On 30 September 2015, SSR operated a train for ARTC in the north-west of NSW with CRL's BRM002 and 4911, and Sydney Trains' railset number 8 (consisting of NDRF wagons).
The consist waited in the loop at Turrawan for the down Xplorer to clear the line.

The Plane
This C47 Dakota S/N 43-49377 was delivered to Australia in January 1945. It was inducted into the R.A.A.F. as Aircraft No. A65 - 67 Registered VH – CUX. She served in many different squadrons including the School of Air Navigation at East Sale.
In 1975 the Australian Government converted A65 – 67 to a Civilian DC3 and on the 10th October 1975, handed her over to the Papua New Guinea Defence force, in the name of foreign Aid, where she was given the Aircraft No. P2-003 with the call sign “Defence Force 3”
She gave approximately 5000 hours of service to the Papua New Guinea Defence Force until she was pensioned off on the 11th February 1992, when the Port Engine developed a massive oil leak and had to be shut down in flight by the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Tim Shaw R.A.A.F., who landed safely at Port Moresby.
This DC3 was bought by tender from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force in July 1993. The Aircraft was flown to Moree in two stages by Captain Reg Perkins and First Officer, David Kilin. The first flight was conducted from Port Moresby to Cairns on Saturday 21st August 1993, and took 3 hours and 20 mins. The second flight took place the following week with an additional crew member. Marty Taylor, the proud Owner, and the duration was 5 hours and 13 mins landing in Moree at 7.10pm on Saturday 28th August 1993.
After a lot of preparatory work including swapping the engines with another DC3 VH – SBL, P2 – 003 was towed through 3 fences and 2 roads to the car park of the Tavern where it sat for 2 months while the foundations for the Aircraft were put in place. The Aircraft was finally lifted into place by three cranes on Tuesday the 23rd November 1993.
The DC3 was officially opened at a Tourist Attraction on 9th April 1994.

SN65 OMS is a Wright Streetdeck H45/28F new Oct 2015 to First Bristol at Hengrove depot. 10 of the batch of 12 had red fronts and route branding for service 90. 35148 had its red front repainted grey in Aug 2016 to act as a spare bus.
In November 2016 it was repainted again into Mendip Xplorer livery and transferred to First Somerset and Avon to join the 8 similar vehicles new to Wells.
The climb over the Mendips proved too much for the Streetdecks and in late 2019 they were transferred to Bristol and replaced by Enviro 400s. 35148 regained its original livery in November 2019.
With the start of the summer timetable in April 2023 all remaining 65 registered Streetdecks were transferred to Weston-super-Mare except for 35162 .They are gradually being withdrawn for conversion to electric power.
Today , according to the bus tracker , 35148 left Six Ways , Clevdon on the 13.43 X6 , but only got as far as Salthouse Fields. It seems to have got as far as Yatton on its way back to the depot , before expiring in the bus stop here. Perhaps this one will be next for electric conversion !
In fact the problem must have been minor as 35148 was back in service 4 days later.
