Edward VII reigned for only 9 years but the postal network was still expanding and some very interesting boxes exist. The earliest Edwardian boxes were modified from the last Victorian designs, but midway through the reign the elaborate scroll cipher of Edward VII began to appear on post boxes. As the network grew, more boxes appeared in country areas such as this attractive lamp-post mounted example. This is on approach to the town of Ellesmere in Shropshire. Box Number SY12 25

Everything was at the ready for the letter writing social. My letters to return are on the corner. I did get to most of them.

I write letters from Democracy Street, Ano Korakiana, to my mum in the Highlands of Scotland, They take three, sometimes five, days to get from the post office at Tzavros in Corfu to Inverarnie, near Inverness. Barbara replies via her tablet:

Can compete with your weather today - lovely hot sun all day Another very readable letter from you this morning, you have no idea how much I enjoy them. visited garden centre today to buy more trees to camouflage ugly chicken fence rowens, cherry, crab apples and beech Apart from hiding fence they will help to reduce the superfluity of silver birch here Must try Skype again best time to be sure of getting me is around lunch time love to Lin and lots to yourself Mum xxxxxxxx Sent from my iPad

My mum taught me typing, lending me her Remington two colour ribbon portable on which she touch-typed through the 40s, 50s and well into the 60s.

I've been writing letters and postcards. They take around 6 days to get to England or Scotland but if I keep up a fairly steady stream they will be dropping through letter boxes in a regular stream. I like the routine writing, of addressing an envelope, of going down to the post office - at Tzavros or in Alexandros Street in town - getting a stamp and posting. I'm assured none of the mailboxes in other places get collections in winter.

I imagine explaining this to my grand child, when he might be interested.

Of course there are emails or phone for emergency but letters! You ‘write’ with a ‘pen' on ‘paper'. Put it in an ‘envelope'. Stick a ‘stamp' on the envelope ("Blimey grandpa, what do you do then?"). You lick the envelope and take it to a post box and…("a postbox?") Yes yes and then the same piece of paper with the writing you put on it with the same lick on the envelope arrives at the home of the person you sent it to - about two weeks later. Lin’s letters to me arrive at the local shop and are handed me by Stammatis with groceries.

mail art makes letter writing so much more fun, and personal - recycled cards, collage and pen drawing, to be folded into one square after finishing the letter - envelope will have a decorated detail as well

This is a picture from June 2012 when I still lived in the Stockholm area. (I actually miss that apartment a little bit). The picture was taken while watching the Simpsons and writing a letter to my penpal, as a part of my "one day in pictures" activity I do on my blog sometimes.

After ten years of research and collecting a significant amount of reference material I decided to start a new project - to restore a photo catalogue from a Meiji Era photo studio.

The photographer is unknown, however user Okinawa Soba suggests it might be Shinichi Suzuki II, whose studio went out of business in 1896.

Inspired by Laura (London Lens) and Chris (Chrism71)'s light painting with torches I thought i'd try the same thing with sparklers- not sure it was a 100% success but meant I had another go playing with shutter speed which was helpful :)

I adore it when people bring in their own typewriters. This portable script Olivetti was a real gem to see.

This is a photograph of a letter my mother sent me in 2000. She wrote about the day I was born. I keep it tucked away in a shoebox with other important papers from the past. Recently, I found out my father has cancer; I haven't seen him since I was 6 years old. Should I write to him? An exploration of all the unanswered questions in the post on red Ravine.

An Open Letter To My Father

a rainy night, i sat here and wrote letters to people i love.

Melvis, one of Stella's daughters, writing a letter to your mother to thank for the clothes they received.

Your mother together with some friends took the effort of collecting as much children's clothing as they could. I in turn took them with me on the plane to Cameroon. On a night in the first week after my arrival we handed them out to the kids. It was a wonderful night.

Who am I talking to?

I received my first pen pal letter yesterday. For more info, visit getthewordsout.blogspot.com/2010/04/may-june-pen-pal-info...
