So yesterday I went back to work on the member_geocoder module. Now it only uses Yahoo to map content in China and England, and still uses Google as the primary geocoder. The key improvement is that any content that Google can’t geocode and isn’t in China or England is sent back to Google to with just the country name. This at least plots content in the correct country. And it gets around the issue that sometimes Google can’t geocode content because part of the address (like the street address) isn’t accurate, the content is in a different language, or simply because Google can’t do it for no good reason. I have more notes on the blog: www.developmentseed.org/blog/geocoding/geonames

I couldn't get the screenshot to capture the video playing in the right hand corner, but this is my favorite thing to do while working: play a movie to watch at the same time.

Fortuitously, her cousin, Michael Guirguis, an entrepreneur with a background in labor coverage and economics, stepped in to assist. As he unraveled volumes of difficult rules and a course of laden with paperwork, he began creating a digital platform for managing the unwieldy workflow.

Alongside the best way, he turned their bureaucratic quagmire right into a golden alternative by founding SESO, a San Francisco-based startup that streamlines the H-2A program. Given the speedy decline in home farmworkers—a development spurred by an aging workforce and anti-immigration policies—the 37-year-old visitor employee program is in determined want of reform, says Guirguis.
