A ghostly empty farm complex in Pennsylvania. The Nyce Eshbeck farm is on the registry of historic places, but the land lies in a park which was hit pretty hard by the storms last year. The area is overgrown from lack of maintenance, but due to the protected location and fine construction, even the oldest buildings from the 1700 and 1800's seem to have lost only window glass and shutters.

This is a shot of dazzling, whitewashed Windmills in juxtaposition with the dark volcanic ground of igneous rock such as theralite, santorin etc. on on Santorini Island, Greece. The island of Santorini is also known as Thēra (Θήρα in Greek, aka as Thira). The architecture of the island is of course Cycladic yet it has a distinctive style of its own. The shot was taken in late October.

These Cormorants appear to be whitewashing the fence, at least in a few spots. :-) HFF

Whitewashed walls and orange terracotta rooftops dot Lisbon's Alfama quarter. This one of Lisbon’s oldest areas with shops selling traditional crafts and cafes and Fado music heard in some of the area's long-running restaurants. Looking out at the Atlantic horizon there is nothing between here and the western hemisphere other than the Azores.

Happy fence Friday, everyone.

I have admired this farm scene every time I have passed by, but have only stopped twice for photos, this one taken on May 16, 2018. The farm is just west of the pleasant town of Brooklyn in the southeast corner of Jackson County.

The Traditional Windmills of Paros: The traditionally whitewashed windmills characterize the Greek islands and mainly the Cyclades, working as symbols of local architecture. In Paros particularly, such windmills are found all around the island. Some are kept in the traditional form and are not used today, while others have been renovated and work as hotels, cafeterias or art galleries.

In the past, these windmills were of vital importance for the locals. Using the power of the wind, which is so strong in the Cyclades, people used to grain the wheat, the most important nutritional element at that time. Most windmills were constructed in the 19th century and fell in disuse after the mid 20th century when technological advancement and quick transport eliminated the need of them. A nice traditional windmill can be seen today at the port of Parikia, the busiest spot of the island.

Driving around the island will also bring you in front of many such windmills, particularly in the region of Naoussa, Marpissa, Lefkes, and Alyki, making them a very integral element of local architecture.
