I shot with Marlies today on one of the finest days that Glasgow has seen for a while. More images to come from this and a blog in the coming days!

The first time I took a shot of wheatgrass I thought I was going to gag! So why would I ever want to grow wheatgrass? Refer back to my last post, ABC’s Of Juicing Wheatgrass: Benefits Of Wheatgrass. I must admit, I just didn’t do it right the first time, or the second time for that matter. ...

The area around Contact Nevada is distinctive in having many outcrops of granite boulders and consequently with sandy soils derived from the decomposed granite. With respect to cheatgrass invasibility, the sagebrush steppe in this area is like that around Wells where clayey soils predominate. That is, cheatgrass is most common along roads but occasionally found within sagebrush steppe.

This particular type of dry warm interior Douglas fir forest is extremely rare, occuring on less than 1000 square kilometers in only 4 valleys in British Columbia that cut through the lee side of the Coast Mountains . It exists in a variety of age-classes from very young (following distrubances such as wildfire) to very old, with perhaps only 3-400 square kilometers of really old forest exant across the 4 valleys (Klinaklini, Homathko/Tatlayoko, Mosley, Chilko). These forests provide excellent habitat for Mule deer, red squirrels, grouse, black bears, cougars, and a huge number of other species. Other plants such as Soap berry (Shepherdia), Bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegnaria) and Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza) are characteristic here as well. This particular tree we "cored" using an increment bore. It is a drill-like implement by which you can extract a tube of wood from the tree from the pith (center) to the bark. From this sample, you can count the growth rings and determine the age of the tree. This individual tree shown here was well into it's sapling stage circa 1400 AD. About the same time that the Mongols were laying waste to Syria, Russia, Iraq etc, and the Inca empire was coming into its glory in Peru. It has lived through all of that, and everything since, here on this spot, without anyone cutting it down. It has survived at least one fairly severe forest fire, where the flames reached as high as 30-40 feet up the trunk. Possibly many more lower frequency ground fires have run through the area over the centuries as well.

This is the wooden and aluminum mould for my next project: Poem. It will be planted with wheatgrass but the object is to get it so root bound that the roots will actually keep their shape once taken out of the mould to create a living word.

Cheatgrass has surrounded and engulfed crested wheatgrass in Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado.

Cheatgrass has captured this area, but has not yet eliminated all other plants. This photo was taken across the hiking trail north of the covered picnic tables. The area by the picnic tables has become dominated by cheatgrass, with very few other plants. As shown in the next photo, the cheatgrass appears to be advancing north.

Crested wheatgrass is said to be more resistant to cheatgrass than are most other grasses. However, that just means that it takes longer to succumb. At this point, it appears likely that the cheatgrass will ultimately eliminate other plants in this spot.

This is one of a series of photos with pictures and information about cheatgrass.

Wheatgrass centerpieces in the clear top 30x60' tent with long tables.

Crested Wheatgrass is currenty the most common grass in Metzger Farm Open Space. It is a "bunchgrass" that grows in conspicuous clumps, as shown in the photo. This grass is usually 1 to 2 feet high in the open space and can be found throughout the open areas. The seed spikes are flattened and are initially dark green, but become lighter as they mature. The leaves are 1/16 to 1/4 inches wide.

Growing in clumps is an effective strategy for grass in dry areas, and also promotes valuable ecological diversity in areas limited by lack of water.

Crested wheatgrass was imported from Russia and widely planted for livestock forage in the western U.S. in the 1950s. It produces usable forage 2 to 3 weeks earlier in the spring than native grasses. It becomes dormant in dry periods and will begin growing again when rainfall occurs--which can produce forage in the fall as well as spring.

Crested wheatgrass out competes and replaces native grasses. It is viewed negatively by those who prefer native grasses, but it is much preferred to some invasive species--notably cheatgrass.

Botanical name Agropyron cristatum.

"Starting the day just like I end it! With Pines WheatGrass! This smoothie has #wheatgrasspowder, #spinach, apples, carrots with a touch of #kale. If you don't want the powder, the tablets are great too! Just consume with your #smoothie."

Studies indicate that as many as 9 out of 10 people do not eat the three or more servings of #wholefood #vegetables that doctors and governments recommend. Studies show those who eat plenty of vegetables, especially dark green ones like the @greensuperfoods from #Pines, live longer and are less likely to become ill.

Beginning in 1932, Charles Schnabel discovered the nutritional density of #wheatgrass harvested at a special time in the early spring that occurs only once each year. He dried it, made it into a powder, packaged it in special oxygen-free glass containers and made the it available to doctors and hospitals. The resulting body of research inspired Ann Wigmore and Steve Meyerowitz, who encourage people to use wheatgrass as a food. Meyerowitz dedicated his popular book to Schnabel and called him, "The Father of Wheatgrass."

Instead of a tray, Schnabel grew wheatgrass outdoors in often freezing temperatures. Real wheatgrass is not grown in a tray with seeds 300 times too close and 7 times faster than natural with roots unable to go deep into rich soil. Such freakish plants result in a juice that is far-too-sweet with only 25% the nutrition of real wheatgrass and with high levels of mold and bacteria. Pines is the only company to follow Dr. Schnabel's standards.

#PinesWheatGrass is the only powder and tablets from Kansas grown by sincere #organic farmers using modern facilities built for organic human food rather than feed for the confined-animal meat industry.

Pines is a #vegan friendly company that does not use plastic containers. We are the only Kansas wheatgrass grown in appropriate areas with plenty of natural rainfall, not irrigation.

lately I have been experimenting with seeds. this is wheatgrass - and the tomcats love it, too.

I'm also trying to grow basil - and even if I really love winter, coldness, snow...I'm longing for some fresh green.

10things: fresh green!

This is what our foothills should look like but now rarely do.

Bluebunch wheatgrass (its scientific name is Pseudoroegneria spicata with synonyms that include Agropyron spicatum and Elymus spicatus and others) is a cool season, drought resistant, perennial native bunchgrass that should be in widespread use in landscapes (but rarely is).

Due to late summer moisture this year, each of these "bunches" has vigorous new growth at the base of their golden-dried flowering stalks (culms) of neatly tufted, and beautiful green leaves. Its appearance at this time of year is in general in stark contrast to the same scene four months ago.

Most of the native bunchgrasses like Bluebunch wheatgrass in starting their growth later in the spring hold moisture longer and are in that sense more "fire resistant" and highly beneficial compared to their exotic counterparts which grow faster and dry out much more quickly and therefore burn more readily and much hotter. Local genotypes of this species, and not Crested wheatgrass, should be used in appropriate locations for restoration purposes.

So, the Bluebunch wheatgrass dominance here is a very good and welcome sign and may also indicate that this location was not extensively grazed (and that might make sense since it would be difficult to access, at least by cattle, due to the steepness of slopes leading into the area that surround it) since Bluebunch wheatgrass does not respond well to heavy grazing.

And what may look like a monoculture is in fact not; the native grasses encourage diversity and a relative wealth of other native species co-occur here despite the harsh gravel substrate. This is in contrast to introduced, exotic grasses such as Crested wheatgrass which tend to exclude other species and yet the USDA and USFS continues to use and recommend it in disturbance-restoration projects (and has done so for decades).

Plants can have awns or be awnless; some taxonomists treat those forms as different entities but genetic research has shown that is controlled by a single gene and they should likely not be treated as separate taxonomic entities.

Avoid #GreenSuperfood blends in plastic containers. Not all wheatgrass is a beautiful dark green color like #PinesWheatGrass. Green #superfood blends with additives such as chocolate or spirulina, use the strong colors of such ingredients to disguise wheatgrass that can be more brown than green. Using Pines #WheatGrass and other single-ingredient products allows you see the color, note the aroma and other characteristics so you can judge the quality of each ingredient you use.

Pines does not produce complicated blends. Pines formulas are very simple, and all Pines ingredients are harvested at the right time and packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps. This kind of packaging allow Pines to remove the oxygen. That protects color and nutritional levels. Besides plastic tubs polluting our oceans and land fills, plastic does not protect green food nutrients from oxidation, which devitalizes sensitive #greenfood components.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wheatgrass is a food prepared from the cotyledons of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. It is sold either as a juice or powder concentrate. Wheatgrass differs from wheat malt in that it is served freeze-dried or fresh, while wheat malt is convectively dried. Wheatgrass is also allowed to grow longer than malt is. It provides chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Claims about the health benefits of wheatgrass range from providing supplemental nutrition to having unique curative properties, though few if any have been scientifically proven. Some consumers grow and juice wheatgrass in their homes. It is often available in juice bars, alone or in mixed fruit or vegetable drinks. It is also available in many health food stores as fresh produce, tablets, frozen juice and powder. Wheatgrass contains no wheat gluten.

History

The consumption of wheatgrass in the Western world began in the 1930s as a result of experiments conducted by Charles F. Schnabel in his attempts to popularize the plant.[1] By 1940, cans of Schnabel's powdered grass were on sale in major drug stores throughout the United States and Canada [2]

Schnabel's research was conducted with wheatgrass grown outdoors in Kansas. His wheatgrass required 200 days of slow growth, through the winter and early spring, when it was harvested at the jointing stage. He claimed that at this stage the plant reached its peak nutritional value; after jointing, concentrations of chlorophyll, protein, and vitamins decline sharply.[3] Harvested grass was dehydrated and made into powders and tablets for human and animal consumption. Wheatgrass grown indoors in trays for ten days contains similar nutritional content. Wheatgrass grown outdoors is harvested, dehydrated at a low temperature and sold in tablet and powdered concentrates. Wheat grass juice powder (freshly squeezed with the water removed) is also available either spray-dried or freeze-dried.

Proponents of wheatgrass make many claims for its health properties, ranging from promotion of general well-being to cancer prevention. These claims have not been substantiated in the scientific literature.[1] There is some limited evidence of beneficial pharmacological effects from chlorophyll, though this does not necessarily apply to dietary chlorophyll.[5][6]

There are a number of other small studies and pilots on the possible benefits of wheatgrass juice. According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,[7] there may be a need for further study of wheatgrass therapy for ulcerative collitis; they cite a small pilot study which showed regular wheatgrass juice therapy significantly reduced rectal bleeding and overall disease activity.[8]

It has been claimed that wheatgrass helps blood flow, digestion and general detoxification of the body.[9] These claims have not been reliably substantiated, or are no different from similar vegetables. However, in one pilot study of children with thalassemia (a hereditary form of anemia which often requires blood transfusions), of the patients who were given 100 ml of wheatgrass juice daily, half showed reduced need for transfusions. No adverse effects were observed.[10] Another small study of transfusion-dependent patients suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome responded similarly to wheatgrass therapy; that is, the intervals between needed transfusions were increased. In addition, the chelation effect (removal of heavy metals from the blood) was studied for the same patients; the wheatgrass therapy showed a significant iron chelation effect.[11]

In another pilot, which was not placebo controlled, breast cancer patients who drank wheatgrass juice daily showed a decreased need for blood- and bone marrow-building medications during chemotherapy, without diminishing the effects of the therapy.[12]

The food has demonstrated in vitro cytotoxicity to HL-60 (Human promyelocytic leukemia cells).[13]

[edit]Nutritional content

Wheatgrass proponent Schnabel claimed in the 1940s that "fifteen pounds of wheatgrass is equal in overall nutritional value to 350 pounds of ordinary garden vegetables",[2] a ratio of 1:23.[3] Despite claims of vitamin and mineral content disproportional to other vegetables, the nutrient content of wheatgrass juice is roughly equivalent to that of common vegetables (see table 1).

Wheatgrass is also claimed to be superior to other vegetables in its content of vitamin B12, a vital nutrient.[citation needed] Contrary to popular belief, B12 is not contained within wheat grass or any vegetable, rather it is a byproduct of the microorganisms living on plants.[14] Analysis of B12 content in wheatgrass has confirmed that it contains negligible amounts of the compound.[15
