Some areas of Grasslands National Park (Saskatchewan) are still very far from resembling native prairie. Park managers, for example, are trying various methods to limit if not eradicate crested wheatgrass, an introduced plant that chokes out native prairie vegetation. In this area they are trying some early season controlled grazing, while limiting public access. I made this shot as a storm was clearing; if that blue sky doesn't look pure blue, that's because it consists of a solid wall of dark. blue-grey cloud.

This is one of my favorite views in our apartment because all the colors blend so nicely...and you can see the kitchen, bathroom, and livingroom all at the same time.

Saturday, 15 August 2020: our temperature around noon is 18C (windchill 18C), but it is supposed to reach 27C this afternoon. Sunrise is at 6:24 am and sunset is at 8:55 pm. A sunny day. We have a hot week ahead of us, with the first three days into the 30Cs (32C on Monday, to feel like 34C.) Much too hot without air-conditioning.

Argh, I lost my description, so will have to start all over again. Sorry about the most uninspiring few photos that I posted late this morning. I did want to post them as a record of yesterday's walk at Mallard Point in Fish Creek Provincial Park, with friend Tony.

There is a group of bushes with their mass of dense, tangled branches that warblers like to hang out in. They flit and hide so well in these branches and it is just about impossible to ever get photos, I was lucky that a Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle - black mask and white throat) was a bit closer.

After telling a friend on the walk that I was sure I had never seen a Northern Waterthrush / Parkesia noveboracensis before, in all these years. When I got home, I checked to see if I had posted a photo on Flickr. As I expected, none came up in a search. As a result, I am adding the only, distant shot I was able to get of the one we saw yesterday - and it is only the back half of the bird that you can see, but you do see the stripes.

There were around 10 participants - maximum allowed is 10 for any birding walk. This was only the second walk I had been on since bird walks were allowed to reopen during COVID-19. It was so good to see various friends again.

Western wheatgrass is one of the most common native grasses in steppe vegetation of Montana and apparently thrives in overstocked areas. A spreading rhizomatous growth habit, leaves and stems that are usually bluegreen, and glumes that narrowly attenuate into a sharp curved tip are distinctions of this native grass species. This site lies long the trail at the north end of Burke Park, Bozeman, Montana.

Help inform consumers about #organic brands that are actually owned by the world's largest GMO food producers and that are not very healthy.

For example, many juicing experts claim that a #juice should be used shortly after being made. Even so, juices from #Suja, #Odwalla, #Naked and #Bolthouse have been put through heat or pressure processes to give them long shelf lives.

Even worse, these brands are part of #Coke, #Pepsi and #Campbell's Soups, three of the largest GMO food and beverage monopolies! Suja received funds both from Coke and also Goldman Sachs, whose executives took more than $100 million in bonuses from the taxpayer bailout.

Further, Coke and other GMO monopolies profit daily from taxpayer funds using GMO ingredients, which are cheap because of taxpayer subsidies.

These massive #GMO monopolies have annual revenue hundreds of thousands times greater than small truly organic companies that struggle to compete with them. They are #bullying their way into the natural foods marketplace and seek to weaken organic standards. Some even use registered trademarks from real 100% organic companies to capitalize on the positive image associated with true organic trademarks.

These GMO monopolies have spent millions to prevent consumers from knowing that their other products are loaded with GMO ingredients and resulting #herbicide and #pesticide residues.

Become a #MightyGreens Warrior! Know the "organic" brands owned by #GMO monopolies and don't buy those products. Understand that each time you buy an "organic" brand owned by a GMO monopoly, you are helping the bottom line of those who seek to destroy organic agriculture.

Even though each GMO monopoly has bought up a few organic brands, nearly all their other products are GMO and everything-but-organic. Please share this chart that identifies those brands: bit.ly/1OPYmKo

The queen of the prairie, this grass can make up to 90% of short and mid grass prairies. This year it is very prominent in the Boulder, CO area, as is western wheatgrass and buffalo grass, probably due to the rain. Discussing this with a former graduate adviser over at CSU, we figured we haven't seen such native grass abundance locally since about 1998! These seed heads are up to 3 feet high.

The grass itself is fine-bladed and suitable for drought resistant lawns, if you can tolerate a blond lawn in winter that takes a while to green up in spring.

A threatened Mardon skipper butterfly basks in the sun at Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

This butterfly is native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America and relies on specific grasses such as Idaho Fescue and Bluebunch Wheatgrass as host plants. The Mardon skipper is a species of conservation concern and its populations have been declining due to habitat loss and degradation.

The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is situated at the crossroads of the Cascade, Klamath, and Siskiyou mountain ranges, and represents an outstanding ecological wonderland. This convergence of three geologically distinct mountain ranges has resulted in an area with unparalleled biological diversity and a tremendously varied landscape. The Monument was established in 2000 in recognition of its remarkable ecology and to protect its diverse range of biological, geological, aquatic, archeological, and historic resources.

i took the root casting outside and photographed it. this is my first successful casting of roots and i want to do more of this and experiment with other plants. if you have any suggestions for invasive roots please feel free to contact me.

I tried to grow wheatgrass for my kitten. I grew fungus instead. 😬 Tossing this and trying again, but not before I take a picture.

This really isn't great ... but it was just too sweet, I couldn't toss it!

I found these close to my home and thought they were weeds, but after some research I found out that Crested wheatgrass spreads like weeds, but they are actually used to suppress the growth of weeds ... Just another topic that got me doing some research and learning something new!

Sydney is from Vermont. As an actor/comedian, she currently is studying improv in New York City. She loves making people laugh and teaching about food. @Bigtasteleanwaist's slogan is "Transforming naughty treats into clean eats!" Sydney provides dozens of tasty recipes on Instagram and her website.

For St. Patricks Day, Sydney made Wheatgrass Zoats containing a full serving of Pines Wheat Grass. Starting your day with greens is always a good way to help you achieve the 3 to 5 recommended servings per day. A teaspoon of Pines mixed into your breakfast recipe is equal nutritionally to a large spinach or kale salad. Here is Sydney's recipe:

This is my bowl of wheatgrass zoats!

1/2c egg whites

1/2c cashew milk

1/3 zucchini grated

2 Tbs coconut flour

1 tsp @wheatgrass_people wheatgrass

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

2 droppers of @sweetleafstevia vanilla creme stevia

Pinch of salt

Combine in a small sauce pan and stir constantly over medium low heat until it turns into oatmeal consistency.

#PinesWheatGrass was the original #greensuperfood. We follow the 80-year old standard of amber glass bottles with special metal caps so that the oxygen can be removed. Without this protection, valuable nutrients are lost to oxidation.

Pines offer the most servings per container. Bigger serving sizes for similar products allows a poor quality product look better on a nutritional facts panel. but with fewer servings per container, plastic tub products are much more expensive for a product that is dull and oxidized rather than fresh and vibrant like Pines.

Pines is grown in a correct climate with ample rainfall. It does not need irrigation water from the contaminated and nearly depleted #Ogallala Aquifer. Our facilities are modern and built for #organic human food, not animal feed for the meat industry. That makes Pines the only #wheatgrass from Kansas that is truly #vegan

Poa pratensis is abundant in this setting, along with green needlegrass (Stipa viridula), prairie junegrass (Koeleria macrantha), bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum), and western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii). This site lies along the Rocky Mountain front south of Augusta along highway 287 towards Wolf Creek near the intersection of highway 200.

Have we forgotten that the reason we take green superfoods is to get more GREEN food nutrition in our diets?

In order to maximize the profits for companies selling them, Green foods are often packaged in cheap plastic tubs or cheap paper packets. In fact, even some wheatgrass is packaged that way.

All Pines products follow the standard used by quality green superfood companies for 80-years. For 40 of those years, Pines has always packaged in amber glass bottles with special metal caps containing tight seals that allow us to remove the oxygen from each bottle. That protects the product from oxidation and loss of nutrients that occurs when sensitive green food products are packaged in plastic tubs or paper packets.

Those recognized for their abilities in food preparation source individual ingredients rather than using complex blends which do not allow you to see the individual ingredients. This is especially a problem for #greensuperfood products like #wheatgrass, which can be blended with darkly colored ingredients to hide poor color and quality. When you select single ingredients rather than blends, you can see, smell, touch and taste each individual ingredient for quality.

Many companies that produce blends do not grow most of the ingredients themselves but deal with dozens of suppliers from far flung places, often China, for the cheapest price without consideration for quality.

With Pines, nearly all our products consist of only one or two ingredients that we grow ourselves on our own #familyfarm. All our products are certified #organic, #nongmoproject verified, #raw and #glutenfree. We are renown for the most nutrition per consumer dollar.

Planted just 5 days prior to Easter on St. Patrick's Day. I was skeptical they'd have enough hair to do this by Easter morning.

Some harvest colours for this last day of October.
