Natures Showpiece

It was bright and sunny on Saturday not as excessively warm as it has been the past month. Karen was out watering trying to give the plants a good soaking. I was out there with my camera trying not to get sprayed with water. taking photos of all the beautiful flowers and plants she has planted this year.

Pseudoroegneria spicata. Common in Eastern Washington and other steppe grasslands of western North America.

I added some wheat grass to my juice today, is this the correct way to do it?

Rio Grande GP40 No. 3131 and GP40-2 No. 3130 pull the Midvale Tramp through West Jordan, Utah on a perfect June 12, 1998 morning in rural Salt Lake County.

Rio Grande 3131 can be found today on the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway roster, wearing number 302 and a paint scheme that mirrors D&RGW livery, if not the actual Rio Grande paint job.

This former D&RGW right of way is very busy in the present, hosting Utah Transit Authority light rail service by day and Savage Bingham & Garfield and Utah Railway local freights by night.

Tauric Chersonese is located in the Crimea, on the shores of the Quarantine Bay of the city of Sevastopol. The word "Chersonesos" in Greek means "peninsula", and the brands were called a warlike tribe that inhabited neighboring mountainous areas. Hence the name of the city. For 2500 years of existence, the city has had several names: Kherson, Sarsona, Korsun.

In 1827, archaeological excavations began here, which continue to this day.The city was founded by the Hellenes in 424-421 BC. Due to its favorable geographical position at the intersection of sea routes, culture, crafts and trade actively developed in the polis. The Greek settlement expanded deep into the Heraclea Peninsula. The initial area of 4 hectares has increased 10 times.

This ancient polis became a stronghold of Christianity in Russia. In the first century, the first followers of Christianity appeared here. In the 5th century, the polis became part of the Byzantine Empire and until the 13th century was the mainstay of Byzantium in the Crimea. In 988, Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovich of Kiev managed to capture Korsun. In Korsun (Chersonese) Prince Vladimir was baptized, and his wedding with Princess Anna of Byzantium took place here. Then Vladimir Krasno Solnyshko returned to Kiev and began to baptize the people.

According to these facts, Korsun is the cradle of Orthodoxy in Russia.........My old friend, artist and poet!

Do you want to go to the sea, listening to inspiration?

A slow dawn floats over the roof,

Birdsong is pouring through the window.

And so on foot, with a notebook and a canvas,

We're going to a place that smells old,

Where thoughts about the empty will not be born

And the sadness will pass, as before, by the side.

Ancient Chersonese is calling us again,

Keeping malleable secrets.

By the grace of heaven you are worth centuries

And the gods are not accidentally benevolent.

I remember a ruined cathedral there

And a milkweed with a knee -high yarutka,

And the branches are a faded carpet

Took him to where the walls were bare

Once-furnished houses

where the smell of fish mixed with wine

It oozed out of the cool cellars,

leaving the pythos *, which grew out of clay.

There and now it's all a mirage

He will appear under the sultry southern sun:

Here is an ancient Greek with a sharpened knife

Clippings from gubana, stingray and sevryuga. The salty breeze of gray hair stirs,

And the bronze body bursts with heat.

And along the paths there is a virgin boxwood

He rushes to the hills with wheatgrass every now and then.

A fresh wave rolls the stone,

He does not contradict the thoughts of the elements,

And the beam tends to the labyrinths of the bottom,

The flocks of fish are dashing.

Draw, write! It's easy to breathe here!

Here the ardor of the soul and the flesh are inseparable

And the influence of generous muses is great,

And their desires are in tune with ours.

You are an invited guest in this wonderful place.

Here Poseidon rocked the biremes,

Here is a ripe bunch of grapes

Frozen in the stone of the visible universe.

HERE POSEIDON ROCKED THE BIREMES...

Tucked between the Needle-and-Thread grass, the Blue Gama grass, Western Wheatgrass, Spike Moss, and June grass, we found patches of cacti. We were visiting at the right season to see these in bloom. The yellow and pink flowers were dotted here and there. Sometimes we look so much at the bigger picture, we miss the stuff right at our feet.

I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

Happy Friday. Have a great start to your weekend.

Try to say that five times real fast!

Over the weekend I did a small mini shoot at Wilkerson Nature Preserve in Wake Forest (right on the Raleigh border). I had never been before but I was in heaven right when I got there. Wow this place is a hidden gem! I wanted so bad to just walk around and explore but I had a shoot to do. However, I know where I will be going on adventures this Spring and Summer. What a picturesque place! :)

I was playing on Flickr recently and noticed several versions of this glorious barn.

Well here you have it. My take - in a drive by at 70 miles per hour.

Every time I drive by it when going back home - it makes me wanna sing Paul Simon:)

I'm not sure what kind of grass this is, but I like the colorful way it begins its reproductive cycle. It seems grass is wind pollinated, so the flowers don't have to be fancy to attract pollinating insects.

After a little searching, my best ID guess is Western wheatgrass anthers. Any ID confirmation or correction would be appreciated.

Wheat grass is just what I call this stuff.

Quite a bit of post processing in Photoshop.

"How beautiful it is out-of-doors; sometimes I long for a country where it is always autumn, but then we should not have snow and apple blossoms, and no wheat and fields of stubble."

This is an Ad for BOOST Juice Bars here in Australia.

They sell "meals in a cup" ie: smoothies, juices and strange concoctions etc. As long as it can go in the blender as solid and come out drinkable, thats all thats required;-)

These Juice Bars are very popular here in Australia. Some of the drinks taste too good to be "really" natural!!

My Project365 photo, DAY 207, 19th Nov 07

One hundred fifty years ago the typical vegetation throughout the Palouse consisted of perennial bunchgrasses, which grew in tufts or clumps, accompanied by many different kinds of "wildflowers." Together, the grasses and flowers gave the appearance (in spring and early summer at least) of a lush meadow, or Palouse Prairie. This type of vegetation occurs in relatively moist environments, where the climate is almost wet enough to support the growth of trees. The principal bunchgrasses of Palouse meadows were Idaho fescue, bluebunch wheatgrass, and prairie junegrass. Short shrubs, especially snowberry and wild rose, were common. Mosses and lichens were an important but inconspicuous feature.

This unnamed peak/hill (at least as far as I as have been able determine) leads to a striking overlook of the Salt Lake valley and boasts a nice remnant and largely intact bunchgrass community which is unusual to find in our area at foothill elevations. One wonders how many scouts and later members of pioneer families (including the Donner-Reed party who camped not far from here in late August of 1846) may have climbed this hill to get a better view of what they were facing in the journey ahead (or for many, the end of one journey and the beginning of another). And the generations of native peoples who came before and may have used this point to look for game, to watch for enemies and enjoy the cool evening summer breeze. This also would have made a very nice vantage point for staring at a sparkling and deep Lake Bonneville completely filling the valley bellow and stretching for miles and miles into the distance, while sitting in a lawn chair and soaking up some rays (with appropriate sun protection!) for an undefined period of time. The silence at times may have been deafening.

Oct. 18, 2014, lower Emigration Canyon, Salt Lake County, Utah. The crest of the hill is at an elevation of about 5,760 ft.

Tall Grasses...

The wheat grass swayed softly on the breeze, gently marking a rhythmic dance that undulated in the light of the waning sun. The warm, golden light painted the scene with a tranquil hue, as if nature herself was conducting a silent, mesmerizing symphony. The gentle rustling created a soothing soundscape, a perfect accompaniment to the picturesque vista.
