TABLE LAMP XX BUTTERFLY

Nature and math is an ocen of inspiration. The organic pattern contains three structures (plus butterflies main lines) and each of them is based upon Voronoi diagram – one of those mathematical oddities (like fractals) that turns up frequently in the world of nature.

The head of the lamp is made of Senegalese gourd. Its diameters are 27 and 23cm.

Thickness of the gourd is about 1cm so the structure is quite deep and it is carved on three different depth levels.

Height of the whole lamp is 48cm.

The diameter of the base is 28cm and it is finished with dark brown jeweler waxed string.

The end of the base is carved from wood.

On the top of the lamp is closing part locked with little magnets.

Really simple stuff: Voronoi or Delaunay plus brownian motion.

Made with Processing plus the excellent Mesh library by Lee Byron.

Oh great, it's like going back to Math class again.

A Terragen2 render

Somewhere between the Victorian mudlarks who used to scavenge the Thames for items of value, and the sea urchins which scavenge the seabed for algae, there exists a species of boy called the Shore Urchin. Their domain is a fantasy shore in a fantasy land in my fantasy head.

Planet/moon is Terragen.

Shore rocks are a tweaked glen5700's excellent Fractalized Voronoi.

Boys are integrated into the scene using Photoshop, and are sourced from a photo (Ready for a Swim) by fabian-f from flickr.

This is the beginnings of a business card I'm making for a client. He does acupuncture so the concept was to use a voronoi diagram with a gridfont to create a mesh that was similar to synaptic movement/action. It came out rather similar to the Processing logo...

The different species of the Cephalopoda, displayed with my Voronoi treemap. It tends to exaggerate the area of isolated small branches, which is not entirely wrong. The red polygon on the top is Spirula spirula, the only member of the family Spirulidae.
