Most goannas are rather large for a lizard, and they all have sharp teeth and long claws. Monitor lizards are predators.
They forage and hunt for lizards, snakes, insects, birds and eggs and even small mammals, and they often dig them out of their shelters and nests.
They're not fussy about what they eat, anything they can grab and overpower will do, and they also eat dead and rotting things.
Like snakes the goannas can unhinge their lower jaw to help them swallow bigger prey. It's impressive to see what size meals they can swallow whole. And if the food is there they will just keep eating. Watching them makes you think they must have bottomless guts.
If this new day becomes unhinged by the Sun’s golden curiosity,
Then we will be able to see again from
The seats of grounded airplanes,
Perspiring upon the cerulean canvas,
Her eyes so far away never opening but in sleep,
Her lips the drunken dictionary men call out
Up and down the Mississippi River
To mark water depth and dangerous flotsam,
Her legs the sleeping gazelles on the savannas
Of her humid bed;
If the sun looks at us again,
Opens the growing music box of men’s woes,
Our destinations encased in a fabriche egg,
The high schools of our lives’ meaningful desire,
The Ferris-Wheel of planets and pulsars trapped
In a tortoise’s teal plating
As he tastes the nebula’s sweet orchid,
The yoke our protein centrifuge,
The whirligig of rest into motion;
Then she will spend another day with us on
This little knickknack of a home;
The delicate front yard which ants run out into,
Neither expectant or aware of our infinitive connection
Nesting in the sailor’s sun doused palm.

Gulls, often referred to as seagulls, are seabirds of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Until the 21st century, most gulls were placed in the genus Larus, but this arrangement is now known to be polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of several genera. An older name for gulls is mew, cognate with German Möwe, Danish måge, Dutch meeuw, and French mouette; this term can still be found in certain regional dialects.
Gulls are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They typically have harsh wailing or squawking calls, stout, longish bills, and webbed feet. Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground-nesting carnivores, which take live food or scavenge opportunistically. Live food often includes crabs and small fish. Gulls have unhinging jaws which allow them to consume large prey. Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea.The large species take up to four years to attain full adult plumage, but two years is typical for small gulls. Large white-headed gulls are typically long-lived birds, with a maximum age of 49 years recorded for the herring gull.
Gulls nest in large, densely packed noisy colonies. They lay two or three speckled eggs in nests composed of vegetation. The young are precocial, being born with dark mottled down, and mobile upon hatching.

Sadly a no fly zone above Ukraine seems unlikely since NATO jets would need to be able not only to engage directly with Russian fighters but to neutralise Russian Surface To Air missile batteries on Ukrainian territory. That would risk wider conflict and throw the justification to Putin perhaps to fulfil his veiled threat to use a tactical nuclear missile at a NATO airbase or on Ukrainian military concentrations. Putin and his gangster government are now a pariah state internationally and may soon face an internal backlash leaving them with little to lose by following through on his grotesque threat.
[PS As these days have passed, and the brutality and killings increase exponentially, it does raise the question fully as to whether a no-fly zone is declared by NATO to stop or limit air attacks. The problem is that would cause direct conflict with Russia by NATO potentially and even with it fully enforced, Russia can shell and use missiles to bombard the cities of Ukraine.
Putin is genuinely unhinged and so the nuclear threat, even if "only" battlefield nuclear weapons, has to be considered a likely risk. Putin once told of an event in his childhood when he killed rats. He cornered one rat and with nowhere to go the rat flew at him and escaped. Whether the story is true or not is irrelevant but it does reveal his likely approach if cornered. Only the people of Russia or the Oligarchs who have relied on him for their wealth can unseat him. Hopefully there is a Mussolini lamppost in Moscow waiting for him very soon.]
Behold the wild, psychedelic blooms of these dahlias, ripped straight from the chaotic heart of my wife’s garden—a Technicolor explosion of pink, white, and yellow that’d make even the most jaded soul pause. These aren’t your tame, suburban flowers, no sir; they’re renegades, bursting forth with a frenetic energy, their petals twisting and curling like they’re riding the edge of some cosmic storm. Planted in the rich, dark soil, they stand tall and defiant, a testament to nature’s unhinged artistry, thriving under the relentless Minnesota summer sun. Each bloom is a fever dream, a splash of raw beauty that hits you like a double shot of adrenaline, daring you to look away. My wife tends them with a madcap devotion, and I’ll be damned if they don’t repay her with a spectacle that’d turn a botanist’s head inside out.

Gulls nest in large, densely packed, noisy colonies. They lay two or three speckled eggs in nests composed of vegetation. The young are precocial, born with dark mottled down and mobile upon hatching.[7] Gulls are resourceful, inquisitive, and intelligent, the larger species in particular,[8] demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly developed social structure. For example, many gull colonies display mobbing behavior, attacking and harassing predators and other intruders.[9] Certain species have exhibited tool-use behavior, such as the herring gull, using pieces of bread as bait with which to catch goldfish, for example.[10] Many species of gulls have learned to coexist successfully with humans and have thrived in human habitats.[11] Others rely on kleptoparasitism to get their food. Gulls have been observed preying on live whales, landing on the whale as it surfaces to peck out pieces of flesh.[12]
Just to prove how unhinged I am tonight I took this photo. Bored. I need to write a book but the plot just isn't coming to me. It's got to be set in a quarry. I've got the title already. It's a simple one. "Dinorwic". Does it sound kind of catchy, you know the sort of title that makes you pull it off the bookshelf and open it?
The storm shakes out its sheets
against the darkening window:
the glass flinches under thrown hail.
Unhinged, the television slips its hold,
streams into black and white
then silence, as the lines go down.
Her postcards stir on the shelf, tip over;
the lights of Calais trip out one by one.
He cannot tell her
how the geese scull back at twilight,
how the lighthouse walks its beam
across the trenches of the sea.
He cannot tell her how the open night
swings like a door without her,
how he is the lock
and she is the key.

This band from Queensland put on a great live show with a lead singer who comes across as rather unhinged. At one point he was leaning down, screaming into the mic, i was taking photos and he lunged towards me and pretty much tackled me to the ground. Not in an aggressive way, more in a "i wonder what would happen if i did this" sort of way. After i picked myself up he just lay their continuing to sing from the floor.
I like a frontman (or woman) who is a little bit crazy, where you never know what they'll do next. Much more entertaining to watch.

Commander TK-5011’s Report: The Jedi were caught by surprise. The few that had been up early, in the fields, had been killed. Judging by their braids they must've been older padawans. Inside, the elderly Ithorian cut down six of my men, before she was killed. Another human Jedi assisted her. He was disarmed by the Inquisitors, brought outside, and killed. My men rounded up around seven younger students, all escorted to the offworld transport. The remaining Jedi have been captured and sent to Sgt. Taran Rackham for interrogation.
I lost another three men to an unhinged training droid, but our Inquisitors made short work of it.
We have secured a dozen Holocrons from the Jedi vault, along with a few other artifacts.
I take full responsibility for the men I lost, and I accept any disciplinary action. I consider the mission a success and I am certain Lord Cerato will be pleased.

The Spirit Drove Jesus
“The Spirit drove Jesus into the desert.” HE was to confront evil head on and that was his mission. The Kingdom of God, as represented by his very presence was a lightning rod for evil. Jesus would conquer this evil in the desert, but as we know, evil would be his constant and violent companion all the way to the cross. In our short reading from the Gospel of John, Jesus is struggling against two powerful currents or forces. One is on a universal level, God’s plan (our Salvation History) is rolling forth and the second involves Jesus’s choice on whether to participate in this plan or not. Since we feel helpless against the larger forces in our lives, I want on focus on Jesus’ personal denial to temptation-because HIS example is our example… where we make an intimate connection to the unfolding story of our salvation.
The next question would be what compels us to make such a choice? The Holy Spirit drives us to!
Lent is where the Church creates an opportunity for each of us (like Jesus) to enter a space… a wilderness or desert (a quiet place where the only distractions are our thoughts and feelings.) Not a place outside of us, but one within us…where we humbly go and confront who we really are. Where we have a dialogue with the good and bad tendencies within us. Where we can freely choose to offer up our spiritual sacrifices…a weakness, a temptation, or habit that permanently changes us in the course of forty days. It is moving past these internal voices and whispers that we encounter our God.
Because the Holy Spirit is our constant companion, evil is conquered and replaced by something good like praying a daily rosary, reading scripture or helping someone. The end result is that “I” decrease…so Jesus shines through what I do and say.
Something I want to stress though, is that even when we say yes to God, bad things will still happen to us. Whether on a global level or on an individual level…evil will affect us…the difference for a believer is that we are not orphaned, and we still have peace in our suffering.
My mother and I have been reading Dante’s Divine Comedy for many years now. We have spent a lot of time in purgatory (what Dante called Purgatorio.) I must admit purgatory seems like a perilous place especially when the images are taken from Dante. We don’t give the subject of purgatory much attention these days. However, I must admit, that it does seem like a very long lent-taken seriously. Then a reality sets in… that life on earth gives us the same opportunity to purge those defects that we stubbornly cling too. The goal of Lent and Purgatory seems to have the same purpose. We are struggling to be that person created in the image of God, that very image that God sees in us, but our false self to often gets in the way.
In another book that I have been reading Dante’s Divine Comedy, a guide for a spiritual journey by Mark Vernon, he says:
“The Desert Fathers and Mothers of the early Christian centuries did something similar when they entered the wilderness and simultaneously entered an inner landscape, to discover their own torments, frailty, temptations, demons. Like Dante, they needed to travel not so as to escape themselves but to encounter themselves. Without the distractions of the world, the contents of their minds became clearer. It was a necessary preparation for catching sight of God.”
Isn’t it interesting, that contemporary culture is also sending the message that participating in religion is unhealthy-we shouldn’t be saddled with guilt and shame. We are encouraged to walk away and forget about sin. Their message is clear, our ego should be given free reign to seek out its own truth and happiness…unhinged from church institutions and their traditions -to float about in the myriad of choices that fail to satisfy. The result is that we seem to be “strangers in a strange land.”
In summary, one truth we cannot deny is that each of us will “pass away” one day. What we take with us is what we love, whether it be good or bad. Our “active participation” in Lent intensifies our efforts to live a holy life, and with the companionship of the Spirit we realize Jesus is with us to lighten the load. Jesus does not leave us alone, in addition he’s given us a model to follow in observing lent (a going into the desert experience)...the Holy Spirit drives us towards HIM. Let us turn our hearts to HIM now.

I feel lately that I'm becomming a little unhinged. That there is just something a little bit off in my life but I can't figure out what it is. I think too much which is starting to consume my brain power, when I overthink I end up passing over the important things, I forget what I'm striving for, I forget my goals and I start to second guess everything that I do.
I think that I need to just tighten the screws and keep going.
p.s. I know that the blood drips should be going down towards the bottom of the frame but I liked this rotation better.
