U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder visited New Zealand for the annual meeting of Attorney Generals from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. He was hosted by the University of Auckland, home to the most prestigious law school in New Zealand. After meeting with several campus representatives of Ambassador Huebner's student advisor group, he addressed an invited audience of over 150 law students, academics, and legal professionals on International Cooperation and the Priorities of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Mr. Holder promoted exchanging ideas and advancing the principles that form the bedrock of the legal system -- peace, security, and equality under the law. He underscored the mutual obligation to protect and improve the lives of citizens, and highlighted the joint priority of tackling transnational violence.
He also spoke about the Justice Department's domestic priorities, including reforming the criminal justice system to address sentencing disparities, expanding the availability of vital legal services, and reforming prisons so they are not used solely for punishment and deterrence but also rehabilitation.
His remarks were followed by a Q&A session. Some of the topics discussed included effective gun control policies in the United States, appropriate responses to terror attacks, and his experiences working for the president.
The Attorney General concluded his remarks with a call to action, imploring the audience to apply their knowledge to make the world a better, fairer, and more accepting place.

The Akha are an indigenous hill tribe that live in small villages at high altitudes in the mountains of Thailand, Burma, Laos, China, and Yunnan Province in China. They made their way from China into South East Asia during the early 1900s. Civil war in Burma and Laos resulted in an increased flow of Akha immigrants and there are now some 80,000 living in Thailand's northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai[1] where they constitute one of the largest of the hill tribes. Many of their villages can be visited by tourists on trekking tours from either of these cities.

Pano from today's hike at Pu'u Hapapa. We stopped short of climbing the mountain on the left as it was way too steep and conditions were way to windy for us. We did see a few other people climb it without incident, though.
Waianae can be seen off in the distance. Never knew there was a road here, although apparently it's only accessible by military personnel.
