Candlelight III Bar has everything an #abandoned #storefront should have! Plenty of #rust, a great #vintage #sign completele with #script lettering and #graffiti on its pull-down gate. We are not sure why this closed but imagine it might have something to do with the gentrification of the neighborhood. #signage #signgeeks #font #typography #type #typevstime #tv_retrotype #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #rustlord_texturaunique #80sixd #trb_ipoft_signs
This @pepsi "spectacular" was created in 1936 by the Artkraft Strauss Sign Corp for the Pepsi-Cola bottling plant that was located on this waterfront area of #Queens. The plant was demolished and high-rise residential towers took its place in 2004 but luckily the #neonsign survived and was reinstalled slightly to the north of its original location. This amazing #neon #sign sadly is not landmarked but we hope it continues to survive. #neongeeks #signgeeks #ig_signage #americana #instaamerica_americana #ipulledoverforthis #trb_ipoft_signs #queenscapes #SignCollective #ig_great_shots_nyc #ignyc #WHPpatterns #newyork_instagram #InstagramNYC #myfeatureshoot #newyork_ig

@denoswonderwheelpark The #wonderwheel was erected in 1920 and stands 150 feet high and holds 144 people at once. Its unusual design for a #ferriswheel incorporates sections of curved tracks connecting an outer wheel and a smaller inner wheel, with 16 swinging cars which roll back and forth between the two wheels. There are also 8 stationary cars. All of the cars give riders panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. We not only love riding on this Ferris wheel but also love the park's #vintage #neonsign depicting its colorful ride! #coneyisland #americana #ig_nycity #IGS_NYC #ig_nyc #insta_america #vintagesign #insta_america_americana #just_unitedstates #ig_signage #signgeeks #neongeeks #neon #SignCollective #typevstime #typography #jj_texttypographical #trb_ipoft_signs #ipulledoverforthis #tv_retrotype
#July4th, Nathan's Famous in Coney Island will hold its annual #hotdog eating contest. This iconic #frankfurter store opened 100 years ago as a small 5-foot long counter selling #hotdogs for a nickel. Nathan and Ida Handwerker, #Polish immigrants, started the business insisting on selling quality specially spiced franks which came in natural casings and freshly fried potatoes. This weekend, this original location will sell an estimated 26,000 hot dogs! Photo and full text on the history of this #storefront appear in our book "New York Nights". This photo really highlights the glorious #vintage #neon signs Nathan's has as it just had finished raining and the glow of the #neon signs are reflected in the puddles on the sidewalk. #WHPilluminate #neonsign #neongeeks #signgeeks #tv_retro #tv_typography #tv_retrotype #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #signcollective #jj_texttypographical #myfeatureshoot #gas_food_lodging
This #diner had a great #vintage #neonsign on its roof but it was recently replaced by an LED lit plastic version. We are not sure why it was replaced but imagine it has somethings to do with the high cost of maintaining a #neon #sign in New York City, where it is exposed to all types of weather including blizzards and heavy rain, which typically "shorts out" a letter or two. We loved its #script and block #lettering in both blue and red colors. Photo from 2010 appears in our book "New York Nights".

Snack Dragon on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side closed over the winter. They served great #tacos for a good price. Their other location on East 3rd Street closed in November 2014 after the owner tripled the rent on the small 100 square-foot space to $3,900 a month. We loved their unique #sign with all of its quirky #typography.

Clover Delicatessen 🍀 is owned and operated by the third-generation of the Cuttita family. They lovingly maintain their gorgeous #neon #signs that line both the front and side of their #storefront. We love the #font that was used as well as the 2-color #neonsign in red and green which is a combination not seen too often (at least in #NYC). We also are big fans of the #vintage street sign they have in their window. We photographed the front of this great #deli for our book "Store Front:The Disappearing Face of New York" in 2004 but this side view is more recent (notice our dog Hudson sitting patiently in the background waiting for us to finish taking the photo) #ipulledoverforthis #typevstime #fontlove #signgeeks #jj_texttypographical #popyacolour #trb_ipoft_signs #tv_texttypographical #tv_retrotype #typography #type
Dublin House is a family-owned #Irish #pub which has been in business since 1921. It was founded by John Carway, an Irish immigrant from Dublin who rented the space during Prohibition. We absolutely love its #vintage #neonsign in the shape of a #harp and its letters that say "TAP ROOM" and "BAR" which blink on and off. The bartender, Mr. Daly told us that the reason the #neon #sign has the words "tap room" is that Dublin House was one of the first #bars to offer #beer on tap. Azucar Ice Cream Company in Little Havava, Miami specializes in artisanal #icecream and #sorbet in #Cuban and tropical flavors. It was founded in 2011 and is known for its #Abuela Maria flavor that has Maria #cookies and ruby red guava and cream cheese in a vanilla ice cream and our favorite Cafe con Leche ice cream (Cuban #coffee with #Oreo). We fell in love with their #storefront with the huge cone holding 5 scoops and a cherry on top and their #neon #sign. Today in NYC, it sure feels like we are in Miami with the high heat and humidity. Pearl Diner in lower Manhattan has been in business since the 1950s. This gorgeous overhanging #neonsign is original and still manages to look great even when all of the #letters are not lit. The menu is typical #diner fare, including #burgers, #milkshake and #pancakes but they also serve #Greek specialties as the owner is Greek. The diner is highly unusual in that it is located in its own single story building amidst the huge #skyscrapers of the financial district. We love their #food and their 50s style booths. We are also happy that they reopened as their business sustained a great deal of damage from flooding due to Superstorm Sandy a few years back. #neon #vintage #neongeeks #signgeeks #americana #trb_ipoft_signs #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #insta_america_americana
Joe's Tavern In Chelsea has not been open in over 20 years but we love that this #vintage #neonsign has survived. It is surprising because this part of western Chelsea near the High Line has become very gentrified and many old buildings like this one have met the wrecking ball to become expensive glass condos. Not only do we hope this #neon survives but we also hope that this old brick tenement building with its peeling paint lives on. #signgeeks #ipulledoverforthis #signcollective #tv_retrotype #jj_texture #ig_signage #jj_texttypographical #gas_food_lodging #everything_signage #signofgrime #trb_ipoft_signs #80sixd

The 1930s #vintage #diner was known for its #burgers, #fries and#milkshakes and was owned by Sunny Sharma. The TV show "Friends" used Moondance as the diner where the character Monica, played by Courtney Cox worked. Moondance Diner was also used by the film "Spider-Man" as the place where Mary Jane Watson played by Kirsten Dunst was employed. Luckily the diner was saved from demolition and purchased for $7,500 by Vince and Cheryl Pierce, who moved the structure by flat-bed truck to LaBarge, Wyoming at a cost of $40,000. After some much needed repairs, they reopened the diner in Wyoming in 2008 where it remained in operation until 2012. We especially loved the diner's rotating moon #sign and the sparkling #letters spelling "Moondance" in an interesting #font. We haven't heard any news on the fate of this diner since its closure a few years ago but hope that it will again be saved. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #food #signgeeks #ipulledoverforthis #gas_food_lodging #trb_ipoft_signs #trb_rural #typography #type
Claremont Liquors in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx had a wonderful #vintage #neonsign as well as #handpainted #signage in the window. We loved how the "Q" was made into a #clock. Gertel's Bakery was in business on Hester Street in the Lower East Side from 1914-2007. This #Jewish bakery, owned by Abe Stern, was known for its rugelach, hamantaschen, and challah bread, which were all baked on premises. Luckily after losing their lease in the #LES (an eight-story condo sits at the site now) they relocated their wholesale #bakery operation to Brooklyn and brought their #vintage #neonsign with them. This vintage overhanging #neonsign from the 1950s was recently uncovered as it had been hidden by a newer plastic face advertising a pizzeria that had occupied the space for the last decade. We couldn't find out much about this old furniture store although it claims to have been in business since 1899. The #storefront is presently being renovated again (for a new restaurant) and it is unclear whether the #signage will be removed entirely or covered up again! If the #neon sign is taken down, the new owners as per New York City law will NOT be able to install such a large overhanging #sign again since it violates the newer laws stipulating that signage cannot overhang more than 18 inches from the facade. #tv_retro #tv_typography #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #signcollective #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #typevstime #Reportagespotlight

To hear more about the fascinating history of this #momandpop #bakery please join us for the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative (LESPI) illustrated lecture, Mom & Pop Storefronts and the Art of Vernacular Design: NYC's Lower East Side and Chinatown TONIGHT, Wednesday, May 18, 2016 6:30-8:30 pm at the Neighborhood Preservation Center 232 E 11th Street, btn. 2nd and 3rd Avenues
Small mom-and-pop businesses are the very soul of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. In the jostle of NYC's commercial “battlefield”, these establishments often compete with louder, brasher, and more exuberant storefront and storefront signage design, much of it a vernacular art. The event features speakers Thomas Rinaldi, author of New York Neon, and James and Karla Murray, authors of Store Front II: A History Preserved, New York Nights, and Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York. Their beautifully illustrated lectures will explore the history and aesthetics of mom-and-pop signage and storefronts in these most iconic neighborhoods. Signed copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase.
General Admission: $12 LESPI members: $10 Tickets can be purchased here from nycharities.org The lectures will be followed by an informal reception. Light refreshments will be served. Contact info@LESPI-nyc.org or 347-827-1846 with any questions.

Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side was established in 1888. It's famous for its #jewish deli #food including its cured corned beef and pastrami. We got word that the original #vintage #neonsign has been removed by the owner, Al Collazo, who has owned the store since 1984. Once an old-school #pharmacy complete with soda fountain counter, it operates as a #diner with a separate #drug store adjacent to it. Collazo sold the #prescription side of the business to CVS in 2014 so it is possible that they decided the #signage no longer fit with their branding. Unfortunately the owner is not commenting on the whereabouts of the iconic #sign which is sad because we are sure lots of places including the Museum of Neon Art @neonmona would be interested in preserving the #neon! #signgeeks #neongeeks #type #typography #font #SignCollective #ig_signage #jj_texttypographical #ipulledoverforthis #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #80sixd
George's Coney Island in Worcester, MA has been serving hot dogs since 1918. It started out as a small lunch counter and was renovated by George and Catherine Tsagarelis in 1938 in an art #artdeco style complete with wooden booths, tile floor and long lunch counter. Its Romanoff-designed enormous iconic #neon #sign is 60 feet tall and was installed in 1940. Randazzo's Clam Bar in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn has been in business since 1916. Helen created their famous and top-secret marinara sauce in 1960. It is still served today in 2 varieties, either spicy hot or medium over clams, calamari, shrimp and other #seafood dishes. Old Town Bar near Union Square has been in business since 1892. It has been in the same family since the early 1980s and is now being run by second-generation family member Gerard Meagher. Gerard told us that "the entire interior of the bar is pretty much original. The mahogany bar with its marble top is 55 feet long and one of the longest mahogany #bars in the city." We love all of the #vintage items inside including the bar, the tin Celine and beveled mirrors. We also love their gorgeous bi-color #neon overhanging #sign which is original and installed in the 1930s. Many famous writers frequented Old Town including Seamus Heaney, Pete Hamill, and Frank McCourt.
