Trainride and Concert

The sobering trainride back to Leiden from the Ladyhawk concert in Utrecht. No fun. Someone nice should be sitting on that seat... Not too tired to doze off. At some point hearing conversations you don´t want to hear. I wish the NS would refurbish these trains. This (lila) has lost it shine, if it ever had it, a long time ago. Unlike the feebly looking other (dubbeldekkers) with the green seats. Green is good :) (As is the orange/darkbrown colorway in the Koplopers.) And although those are quite narrow, in these ones there´s just too much space. You automatically feel like not talking to the person in front of/next to you. And I can never get in to a comfortable position in them. Maybe it´s meant this way...

At least there wasn´t any stormy weather as they had predicted that night.

24 July 2013

Day out for Gramps, Lornie and Laylee-Maylee.

A short while back, on the day before Colette's birthday party, Eric, Colette, and I took a 3-hour ride on the Heber Creeper. I had been on it once before when I was in summer camp many, many years ago. I don't remember the train ride so much as the experience of it. I was hungry from the start, and the only thing we had to eat on the train were pickles. I hate pickles, and so I waited. And waited and waited. Until finally we got to our destination. And then I had to wait even longer for us to find a picnic area where lunch could be served. And what was for lunch but a bunch of hotdogs of which I can only eat so many before I start to feel sick. That day wasn't a very good day. But the day Eric, Colette, and I went on the Heber Creeper, it was a great day. Sure, we forgot the tickets on our way out and only remembered when we had gotten too far up Parley's to turn back. Sure, we had to pick up my sister Maura almost immediately after the train ride was over. And, sure, the train moved at a crawling pace. But it was rainy when we started out, and then it was a perfectly (we like the rain and the clouds) cloudy day as we traversed Provo Canyon. This was both Eric's and Colette's first train ride ever, and I marveled at the thought of it as we rode along. Trains are an awesome mode of transportation, and I wish we had the time these days to travel by train instead of by car or by plane. There's just something so aesthetically pleasing about them, but also it's nice to just sit back and relax and take in the scenery around you as you travel through the country.

As I write about this train experience now, I remember the train tracks behind our apartment in Germany. I remember the trains roaring along the train tracks in the dead of the night and the warnings I would receive from my mother to stay away from the train tracks during the day. I remember the blimps and the hot air balloons we would see on a semi-regular basis just drifting over those same train tracks. I miss those days sometimes, those days of complete and absolute innocense when the world was a marvel to wonder over at every instant. Those days were magical no matter the place, no matter the environment, and they're hard to replace. But I hope that I accomplish at least a little bit of that magic for Colette by doing such things as this. I hope that one day she remembers the day we took a neverending train ride through some beautiful canyon and how the day just seemed to transform itself into something else. As if in a dream in some magical place where everything is perfect and there's no thought of anything bad ever coming to pass.

Visiting Java and Bali

Destination Jakarta today, Non-stop Amsterdam-Jakarta.

We arrived in Jakarta in the late morning and headed straight away for the old Harbor and Dutch Cityhall.

That was enough for the day and our 14 hour flight.

Leaving Jakarta already next morning, after a quick stop at the Monas, for Bogor and the Puncak pass, but the pass was deleted from the tour as the roads were blocked during this eastern holiday weekend.

Visited only Bogor Botanic gardens and headed to Bandung via Jakarta.

Bandung is famous for its Art Deco city center.

We boarded the train for a 5 hour scenic drive to Kroya .

Night-stop at Wonosobo with the Dieng Vulcanic area and Java's oldest Hindi temples are nearby.

Fortunatly it didn't rain during our visit to the famous Borobudur temple complex .

We arrived in Yogjakarta for a full package - 2 day visit.

A becak tour in the early moring to the the Sultans Kraton Palace, Shopping, Batik, silver and dinner show to name a few.

On the second day a bicycle tour near Prambanan and more World Heritage at the Impressive Prambanan temple complex

Our second scenic trainride ends in Batu.

Time to relax here and prepare for our ultimate sunrise experience at the Bromo vulcano.

One more stopover in Kalibaru with a nice Botanic Garden before we took the ferry to Bali.

A few days at Bali Sanur Beach, relax and enjoying the sun.

Despite a few activities : Mountainbike at Bali's famous Ricefields, snorkling and visiting art village Ubud as we headed for our last

visit at the Tanah Lot temple for sunset.
