A view from the Glacier Express, in the Swiss Alps. The train is known as “the fastest slow train in the world.” The ride from Zurich to Zermatt was an incredible experience, filled with unbelievable beauty, good food and wine. This was just one of many scenes that we enjoyed….

Cass, a historic logging town in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, founded in 1901, named for Joseph Kerr Cass, vice president and cofounder of the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company.

The Cass saw mill operation was enormous during its heyday 1908 to 1922, cutting 1.5 million feet (457.2 Km) of lumber per week. The cut logs were brought to the saw mill and went to a series of process of washing, cleaning, cutting, drying, and smoothing for use by paper and hardwood-flooring companies throughout the U.S. Drying kilns were using 11 miles (17.7 Km) of steam pipe.

In 1960 the mill closed. In 1963, the state bought the logging railroad and converted it into a tourist attraction, carrying passengers into the vast Monongahela National Forest. In the late 1970s, the state bought most of the town and its buildings for the new Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. In 1982 the mill burned down.

Park offers excursions that transport visitors back in time and an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life.

The Cass Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

This was the point of the long bus ride and the end of two hours on the train. The High Falls is horseshoe-shaped, and over 100ft wide, falling 20ft into a large pool below. Like all the rivers and creeks that we had seen previously it was low in volume due to a serious lack of rain. Still very beautiful! Unlike my part mountain goat buddy Anita, I did not go on the slippery rocks to get the view from head on but stayed in safety at the side. LOL There were 65 stairs down to this point, most of them covered in damp, slippery leaves. The only way to see the falls is by hiking in or taking the train. We were allowed about 45 minutes here to enjoy this wonderful place and then back to the train for the 2 hour trek back down and out of the mountains. It was well worth the long ride on the bus, juggling lunch between the moving cars and the super early start to the day! :)

On the morning of 02.01.2019, there was a serious train accident with 6 casualties on the bridge - almost at the excact spot where this was shot. But that said - train travel is still much safer than going by car.
