Usually when a good train comes around, it is usually on the CPKC Windsor sub the train comes on, in which I get straight to documenting old searchlights if possible. But, sometimes it is nice to take a break to shoot something good on the Chatham sub. While it might not be as good photo wise compared to the Windsor sub around here, I had the chance to shoot an EB CN leader in the morning on the Chatham sub. This is something pretty rare, as 438 never runs in the morning, like they used to back in the early 2010s, and 514 only runs EB from Chatham to Thamesville, in which you have to hope they run in the morning and face the right way AND have cars :). But, instead of 1501 leading the tech train, we have CN 0999 here with an Ex-IC Dash 9 as a pilot. Now I do not know what the difference is between the two technically, but after catching 72 the morning of, I heard them getting ready to leave CN Little yard on my scanner. This gave me the opportunity to shoot the Dash 9 in morning light here at Belle River Marina, a catch I have been wanting to get a good shot for a long while. The train was lined into Stoney point siding for a meet with VIA 71.

Following the annual CSX Santa Train has become one of my favorite railfan traditions. The weather is often not the best but it is such a cool operation and it's great to see and meet many of the internet names from Flickr and FB. This year CSX timed one of the first runs of it's latest mullet heritage unit with leading the Santa Train. And engineer Scott 'Scooter' Steffey timed his last run before retirement with running this year's train. What a way to go out. He appeared to be having a great time often playing the best rendition of Jingle Bells that a GEVO horn can make. Here the train is pulling into Elkhorn City, KY at 7:01 AM for it's first stop on the former Clinchfield. Sunrise on the date would have been at 7:17 on this cloudy day. So it was quite dark taking this shot. I've often said that these modern cameras see better in the dark than I do and this shot proves it. Other than blowing out the headlight (I have to get wider), I'm pretty happy with it.

i decided to add queen anne's lace to my wildflower garden. so i took a bucket and shovel to the nearest railroad. (isn't it interesting how this flower grows around all train tracks?). as i put shovel to ground, an older man walked toward me.

him: what are you doing?

me: digging up queen anne's lace for my garden.

him: you can't do that!

me: oh, is there an ordinance against this?

him: no, but that thing is a weed. you don't want it. it'll grow up all over your yard.

me: well, i think it's pretty.

him: fine, do whatever you want.

i think human perceptions are interesting. what's a flower versus a weed? what is beauty? what is kindness? we hold many different views. each day i see or learn something new.

The 1880 Train is an attraction in Hill City, South Dakota. The train carries passengers on a 2 hour narrated ride between Hill City and Keystone. The train operates three steam and two diesel locomotives. It is called the 1880 train because it follows the original route of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad laid down in the 1880's which serviced mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone.

Both of Metro-North’s 40th Anniversary P32s lead an inspection train westbound through West Haven, CT on the New Haven Line.

train station in lower austria in the early morning.

shooting conditions:

foggy autumn, about 6:00am (twilight, sunlight starts at ~7:00am), shot was started when the train was entering the station and continued way after all movement has stopped (30 seconds exposure total).

result: light of the locomotive trailing trough the picture (from the movement in the first half of the exposure) while still getting a sharp look at the wagon (second half of the exposure).

also the person to the left turned into a ghost because he waited motionless till the train came to a standstill and moved then to enter the train.

Fun fact: I built the train model almost a year ago. I wanted to build a moc with it and post it at the end of last summer but lack of time or motivation and constant change of ideas made me finish it 10 months later.

The idea of building an old train or a locomotive came while playing Red Dead Redemption II, so yeah, the game was the main inspiration, even tho there isn’t much Western-like stuff on the moc.

Hope you like it :)

This is an image of the rail carriage I took to Ennis from Sixmilebridge this morning. (The photo is strongly influenced by the work of my contact Tim El Marinero.) I'm always keeping an eye out in case contact and train driver Dermot Mullane is at the helm, but not today!

I started taking the train to work last year but late last summer I ended up back in the car again. However, given that the citizenry have been saddled with bailing out the Irish Banks by our incompetent government (don't get me started), the price of petrol and the cost of parking have increased significantly. Getting back on Irish Rail is a no-brainer really. I'm lucky to have access to it on my doorstep.

Around Flagstaff Arizona, the BNSF train tracks are always busy. I like to look for interesting places to take photos of trains, then wait. Never have to wait too long.
