Behind this 'Balloon Clock' looms an antique classic: the 19th century 'American Student Lamp'. Another oil lamp from the same period is on the right. Both have been electrified. Processed in PS.

This is another four flash setup triggered by a Canon ST-E3 RT Speedlite Transmitter:

- Flash #1 in a 20-inch softbox on the left, at the same height as the clock at a distance of 12 inches.

- Flash #2 is in a 14-inch softbox on the right at the same height about 18” from the clock.

- Flash #3, bare flash, minimal power, sitting dead centre about two feet from the clock on a flat white bounce card which itself extends to about 8 inches in front of the clock, providing a little front fill on the clock legs.

- Flash #4 is a 'Morris' Mini Slave Flash (about the size of a golf ball) with three stops of ND gel. It sits behind the lamp on the right. It provides the slash of light on the right casting a shadow on the foot of the clock. And it highlights the glass objects at the rear between the clock and the right lamp.

- White bounce card #2 is suspended again roof-like atop the two soft boxes, sloping downwards to the rear.

BTW, if you can find one of these Morris Mini Slaves, grab it! They are very handy! :-)

This young dhaman rat snake (Ptyas mucosa) struck me as very calm, only turning and leaving when I moved a little too close. When I uploaded the photos onto my computer I realised that might have been because it had some awful injuries, probably from the bastards who take care of the the park with their weed whackers. It seems that they also have decided to rid the place of snakes if they can. This one had a horrible wound on its head and another on its side, both covered with fat ticks.

The time runs, the seasons run, the years run and I'm still here

The Big Hoot has brought businesses, artists, schools and the local community together to create a public art trail of stunning owl sculptures on display across Birmingham from 20 July until 27 September.

All the giant owls have been sponsored by companies and organisations and at the end of the trail, they will be auctioned to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Tick twister in action - see newest upload.

In a field of ticks, or little did I realise at the time. Until I discovered this little mite had eaten away at me leg. note to self, gators required! Ended up in a bit of rush as the hole of light illuminated the distant mountains, soon after the shaft moved on.

Bald Eagle -

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

from my last trip

I've been thinking a lot about the problems created by design wonks. "We can't do [obvious feature that would enhance a piece of hardware or software 100%]. It doesn't fit with the design aesthetic."

Maybe I'll use this photo to make that point in a presentation. Here's an elegant oak transom topped by a gorgeous brass clock, underneath a cavernous and stately arched ceiling that gives people a thoughtful sense of sky without creating a big distraction in a space meant for study.

Underneath is a sign that someone printed and cut out without a whole lot of care. It's stuck there with Scotch tape.

Ah.

But I approve. It's quick and it solves the problem, and it's better than not having a sign there. Without it, people wouldn't know what department is beyond this entranceway. Ultimately, the Boston Public Library is meant to be interacted with, not to be appreciated from a respectful distance as an architectural object. It's an ugly sign, but it helps the user out.

I can imagine a design wonk's approach to this. "We're trying to de-clutter the interface and reduce label-usage to its minimum required level. It's an open entranceway to a room that fewer than 15% of library patrons use.

"I'm not even too happy about the use of numerals on the clock face, if I'm going to be completely honest...and do those curly things even serve a purpose?"

Now that I've made that point: if I went to a little sign shop and had a nice "Social Sciences" placard painted on a strip of masonite at the correct size and gave it to the clerk at the Social Sciences desk, I wonder if they'd take down the paper one?

Hmm. See, I'm making a common mistake: I've created the "obvious solution" that would occur to an outsider without any knowledge of the unique problems of operating a public building. For instance, the laser-printed sign is cheap and ugly, BUT a piece of laser-printed paper is unlikely to get stolen from a high-trafficked public place.

(Still, I bet that such a placard would cost next to nothing for me to have made. At minimum, perhaps the BPL would think of it as a Lovely Gesture?)

Photo Notes - Another EM-1 win. Image sensor stabilization allowed me to use a small aperture to keep the ceiling in focus, despite the slow shutter speed. I could have gotten this shot with my old camera, but only if I'd cranked the ISO way up and introduced a lot of noise. I'm pretty sure it would be un-gettable with a phone.

Just a little fun on a hike at the Robert Woodruff Nature Center in Van Hornsville. (Not the name of this falls!)

We were visiting friends Ed Smathers and Jess Painter and they were kind enough to take us on a hike down this unique nature trail. A little research shows this may be Sawmill Falls.

Well, at least I was thinking of ticks as I was down there along the moist riverbank environment ...

Took this late evening blue hour capture into the realm of monochrome. A lush world in the late Spring along this river. A peaceful time to be there. Saw two beavers out in the river while hiking on this evening.

Gunpowder Falls State Park, Maryland

hey there, remember mee?? probably not, i have been a terrible contact the last week, got some seeerious catching up to do.

nghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i have such a split personality, its freakish. one minute i am able to embrace my life, love it, cope. and the next minute i am petrified. i question existence, truth, purpose. i feel lost. i know everyone has mood swings, but these are different to the ones i used to have, they aren't what i would call normal. i sit, knees to my chin, and i rock, eyes unfocused, caught up within myself. i feel detatched from me, as in the me i want to be, the me i hope people percieve me to be. even though i wish even that me was different. i dont understand why i wake up the same person every day. i want to escape the constraints and create my own. sometimes, it takes an hour or so to become aware of it, this alter-mindset. one minute i am aware of my thoughts, the next i am consumed by an overriding feeling i am unable to define. other times, i feel myself slipping. usually i am alone, but sometimes it starts when in company. i try to stop it. i want this to stop. it is consuming me and defining me, and i dont like what i fear i am becoming. i think i am insane. but who isn't?
