A very big cow tied up on the tobacco farm.

Tobacco farming is the main industry in the Viñales Valley, with numerous small holdings laid out between the large limestone mogotes which rise from the valley floor.

Farmers take advantage of the rich red soil of the valleys to harvest their crop in a labour intensive way, using both man and animal-power to plough their fields, pick the crop and then dry to tobacco so it can be sold.

The farm we visited was run by a large family of three generations, each doing their bit to ensure it is a success, with the help of several farm workers and a few oxen.

Just when we thought we had weathered the worst of our October Nor'easter, we lost phone & Internet for a day & a half, putting us out of communication with the world. So, we took a walk in the neighborhood--November 2, 2011 in Columbia County, New York, USA. It was wonderful, what we saw! This string of milkweed parasols is caught by a thread & left to blow in the wind. Wonder if the seeds will ever get their chance at immortality!

Carmen shared some of her lemon-almond tea cake with me yesterday morning, and then she and Elsa came upstairs for a little while. Here's Elsa on the floor in my living room, chewing on the tether attached to a couple of her toys. She really likes strings and shoelaces right now, and the tethers seem to fall into that category. She's also very close to figuring out how to crawl...

Sometimes the tide tries to steal the beach on its way out. By tying a strong rope to a post and anchoring it to a tripod we can make sure the beach is still there in the morning. The tides are of course the result of huge shoals of jellyfish chasing smarties on the moon.

I think a lower perspective would have made for a better shot. If the beach is still there I will go back for another try.
