Unusually, DE24 297 has arrived in platform 6, next to the IzBan tracks at Izmir Alsancak with the 07.00 service from Bandirma Sehir.
TURKEY : Thru' the early morning autumn mist a heavily patronized local service from Karabúk comprising of rolling stock of various ages and provenance hauled by a Turkish State Railways [TCDD] 'Middle East' class 2-8-2 locomotive No.46206 makes a sprightly start from Catalagzi for the final 11 km. run to Zongdulak in this coal mining area of northern Turkey. This locomotive was built for the U.S Army Transportation Corps in 1942 at the Alco Works in Schenectady, NY.USA
Running long hood leading, DE22 044 calls at a rather wet Kayas whilst working the 05.45 Kirikkale-Marsandiz.

Sign above one of the ticket windows at Sirkeci Station, Istanbul. Sirkeci serves as the Turkish State Railways connection to the international rail network in Europe. This was also the original terminal for the Orient Express before being truncated in 1977.
Here, this sign gives instructions in Turkish, German, English, Italian, and French.
With the brand new YHT station taking shape on the left, Ankara based DE22 032 is seen having arrived on the 18.30 Izmir Alsancak-Ankara overnight, a journey of 867kms. Meanwhile DE22 059 is about to depart on the 11.15 Ankara-Kurtalan, which will take over 24 hours and stretch to 1,272kms.
The passing loop at Ayvacik is out of use in the evenings, so when the 15.55 Bandirma Sehir-Izmir Alsancak is running late, it must wait at Muradiye to pass the 20.35 Izmir-Konya overnight. On this occassion DE24 340 was over 30mins late, and is seen waiting for the Konya overnight to pass.
With DE24 363 on freight duties in the yard, DE24 203 arrives on the 10.55 Izmir Basmane-Bandirma Sehir service.
DE22 016 ready to depart Izmir Alsancak with the 15.08 to Usak. This loco has probably suffered accident damage, as it has been fitted with a DE33 cab and nose, complete with single window.

The 06.20 Usak - Izmir Alsancak service was in the hands of DE22 016 when seen here after terminating at Alsancak. The Usak line services are usually powered by DE24 or DE33 locos.
This is a US Army Transportation Corps S200 class 2-8-2. They were sold to Britain under lend-lease arrangements but ended up in various places in the MIddle East, including here in Turkey.
In the growing gloom of early evening this badly leaking example was shunting at Zonguldak in 1984, 40 years after the war. Shortly after I took this picture the secret police sent us packing!

After arriving at Mersin on the 07.23 from Islahiye, DE24 311 runs round its stock, before shunting it out of the platform and into a siding along with the stock from the Iskenderun service. Both sets of stock will sit there until the late afternoon, when they make their respective return journeys via Adana.
The electrification posts are now in place at Mersin, as DE24 133 has arrived on the 07.23 from Islahiye.
