The word Ouachita is composed of two Choctaw words: ouac, a buffalo, and chito, large. It means the country of large buffaloes, as numerous herds of those animals having formerly covered the region.
i shot this sunset recently from the top of Rich Mountain on the Talimena Scenic Byway; this ridgetop drive runs over 50 miles from Mena, Arkansas to Talihina, Oklahoma and has many pullouts for vistas.

No sooner had we crossed into Oklahoma on the Talimena Trail, but we meet with this youngster just posing for us, patiently waiting for me to roll my window down and click off a few shots as my wife pulled the car to a stop.

While on route to the Talimena scenic drive I stoped at Sardis Lake, near Clayton, Oklahoma.
The weather was strange but the cloud coverage helped a bit on the pictures.
This trail leads from the Talimena Scenic Drive down to where the original state line marker was placed. It is gone but a small metal stake is still there.

No, he didn't touch it. My boys and I found this millipede in the Queen Wilhelmena State Park, near the border of Arkansas and Oklahoma, on the Talimena Scenic Drive.

This is the view from Sunset Point Vista on the west side of Rich Mountain along the Talimena Scenic Drive. It would have turned out better with some clouds lit by the sunset, but the colors are nice anyway. I might come back here when the leaves turn in the fall.

One begins from an elevation of 274 ft. and goes to an elevation of 2,600 ft. in a distance of less than 100 miles. There are mountain elevations of 2,400 feet on one side, and elevations of 2,600 feet on the other for almost ten miles. Throughout the drive, there are steep grades and swift curves.
