Today would have been my father's 99th Birthday. He served as an Army medic in WWII. During heavy fighting in the Phillipines his unit was cut off from the main Army force for three weeks. Under constant attack he crawled in the mud from soldier to soldier, some dead, some dying, some with lost limbs. He was an "old man" in the platoon in his early 30's, trying to render aid to 18 year old boys. They couldn't evacuate the wounded so he could only watch them die. Physically, he survived with scrapnal in his legs. But he left his soul on the battlefield, suffering from PTSD for the rest of his life. There was was no diagnosis or treatment. The term didn't even exist until he was 70 years old. His depression became so severe he underwent a series of electro shock treatments in the early 70's. But he was still just a shell of the man, son of an itenerant farmer, that left to go to war in 1943. He still managed to be a good husband and father. Went to work every day, didn't drink or smoke and was never abusive. He NEVER talked about the war, unless a war buddy came through town, and they talked in private.
This anecdote is meant to be both a tribute to my fathers sacrifice and suffering, but also a reminder that the physical and emotional wounds of our soldiers returning from Iraq and Afganistan will have suffered injuries that they will never completely recover from. They can be helped because we understand now what we didn't have a clue about in my father's post war era. In essence, this is plea for all American's to extent to our soldiers and veterans every possible kindness and expression of our appreciation. Support the VA and any organization that tries to help them and their families. Call your congressmen and women and insist that they properly fund the VA and other programs. And finally, after these current wars are over DON'T FORGET.

Sexy, flirty, fun! Army Strong: All Night Long!
Beautiful scripty letters read "Army Strong," with matching pink and white stencil-style letters below reading "All Night Long." Grey hibiscus flowers in the background give this bright design a fresh, summer feel. A lime green scratched heart floats above the text and matching green dog tags liven this flirty design up! Army Strong - All Night Long!
At the funeral of fallen Nevada Army Sgt. Josue E. Hernandez Chavez, the Nevada Patriot Guard, Marine Riders and American Legion Post 149 plus a few firefighters prepare to provide a 100+ member strong flag bearing honor guard as his casket was moved from the chapel to the burial site. The Guard then filed along the wall providing a silent salute throughout the services. The group waited patiently for over an hour while the services went on inside the chapel.
This garage has been like this for years now. I like this one more than my colored photograph because it's more haunting even though you can't see the blood red paint they used.
And personally I think the message is something Republicans and Democrats can believe in; regardless of political alignment, it would be nice to have these men and women home and out of harm's way..
