1st Sgt. Miguel Antia, senior enlisted member, Headquarters and HeadquartersTroop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, visited the Freedom Monument in Riga, Latvia March 25, 2015. Col. Martin Liberts, Commander, Latvian National Armed Forces, invited Antia to attend a memorial ceremony honoring the thousands of people deported to Siberia by occupying Soviet forces in 1949. Approximately 42,000 Latvians were deported on March 25, 1949 alone and the date is now designated as Communist Genocide Memorial Day, with flowers laid at the monument and many of the rail points used for the deportations. Flags are also flown at half-mast to honor the vicitms. Andris Berzins, President of Latvia, was in attendance to give a brief speech and lay flowers."Today, commemorating the victims and honoring those who survived, we must remember that the greatest crime is to deny a person humanity. May this day and commemoration be a clear warning to all those who are still trying to occupy free and independent states,” said Berzins.Antias’ and other U.S. service members’ presence at the event exemplifies the strong partnership between NATO nations and lasting commitment. Troopers from Bravo Battery, Field Artillery Squadron, 2d Calvary Regiment show Latvian Soldiers of Fire Support Company, Combat Support Battalion, operating and setup procedures of the M777 155mm Howitzer at Adazi Military Base, Latvia on March 24, 2015. The weapons familiarization training is part of Operation Summer Shield XII a 10-day evolving training process during which partner forces from the U.S., Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Germany, Canada and the United Kingdom will work alongside one another in combined arms and live-fire maneuvers. This is the first exercise in which artillery pieces of this magnitude will be fired on Latvian soil since WWII. Operations like OSS XII provide great platforms to expand the involvement of U.S. troops in the region improving interoperability and confidence among NATO allies. (U.S. Army photo By Sgt. This man is an 80 year old world war II veteran. He lives in the home his great grandfather built. He says that protesting governmental decisions men disagree with is a patriotic duty men paid for with their lives. You can see his display from route 50. Someone stopped here at his home recently to tell him his display was unpatriotic. His response was, " How is honoring our war dead unpatriotic, sir?"
