APEFLY at my butterfly garden
Details
Family: Lycaenidae
Subfamily: Miletinae
Genus: Spalgis
Species: epius epius
Common Name: Apefly
Wingspan: 10-14 mm
The Apefly (Spalgis epius) is a small butterfly found in Asia that belongs to the Lycaenids or Blues family - wingspan about 10-14 mm with dark brown wings above, and a greyish buff underside with dark striations. There is a clearly defined white spot at the cell end of the forewing. It gets its name from the supposed resemblance of its caterpillar to the face of an ape.
Description
This Lycaenid is unique in that its larva stage is carnivorous! The caterpillar feeds on coccids Dactylopius adonideum which is the "mealy bug" of tea planters. The caterpillars of this butterfly like other members of the subfamily Miletinae are entomophagous and are predators of scale insects. The species unlike many other lycaenid butterflies is not myrmecophilous.
Habitat & Habits
The butterfly flies rapidly and erratically. Occasionally, it has a habit of flying rapidly around a bush, and landing to rest persistently on its favourite perch. It is a rare butterfly in Singapore, and probably is missed by most observers due to its small size and relatively drab colors.
Male
Upperside: dull brown, slightly darker towards the apex of the fore wing; also a more or less quadrate whitish spot beyond the apex of the cell on the same wing; in some specimens this spot is slightly diffuse. Underside : pale, silky, brownish-white; fore and hind wings crossed by numerous, very slender, short, sinuous, transverse, dark brown strigae which are outwardly slenderly edged with brownish-white of a shade paler than that of the ground-colour; both wings with an anticiliary dark brown line with on the inner side a similar edging. Fore wing, in addition, with an oval white spot beyond the cell. Cilia of both fore and hind wings of the same shade as the ground-colour of the wings. Antenna, head, thorax and abdomen pale brown, club of antennae ochraceous at apex; beneath : the palpi and thorax brownish-grey, abdomen pale brown.
Female
Upperside: slightly paler brown. Fore wing: the cell and apex darker; a white spot similar to that in the male but larger, beyond the apex of the cell; in most specimens extended diffusely outwards and downwards. Hind wing: similar to that of the male. Underside: precisely as in the male.

Against Racist Violence On African Nationals 18.1.14 in Khidki Village Led by-Delhi Law Minister .
J~....
.
19 January, Sunday .
assemble at Ganga Bus Stop.
Jantar Mantar, 12 Noon .
at 10.30am .
AISA expres ses grave concern and condemns the incident involving the Delhi Law Minister's attempted raid on .
African nationals in Khidki village on the prejudiced plea that they are running drug and sex racket. .
The Minister. Somnath Bharti, insisted that the police conduct a raid even without any search warrant. Two African women .
have said, on record. that they were subjected to racist abuse ('black people break laws') and beaten by a mob of people .
(the Minister's supporters), and that it was the Belhi police who protected them from the mob violence. ( .
indianexp ress.com/article/india/india-others/they-held-us-in-taxi-for-3-hrs-took -urine-sam pies-said-black-people-break-laws/). .
There are also reports that one of the women was forced to give a urine sample in public The women were also subjected to cavity searches and tests -none of which yielded any sign of drugs. The violence against the women was defended in the name of anger against 'prostitution' and 'drug peddling', while no proof of the same has been presented as yet. In any case, the treatment meted out to the women cannot be just1fied even 1f they were indeed prostitutes! .
According to news reports, the Minister, Somnath Bharti, asked locals to draw up a list of African nationals, .
residences -'j ahan aise log rehte hain/where such people live', vowing to raid and search each of these .
homes. He also told media, "I have received a lot of complaints from women in this locality against foreign .
nationals, yeh hum aur aap jaise nahin hain (They are not like you or me)." .
.
If indeed the Minister has any intelligence input, or proof, of illegal activity, he must pursue action ir a way that responsibly .
avo1ds fanning up racist preJudtces. When Delhi police fails to uphold its legal, constitutional dut>t we all protest, and we .
w1ll be glad to have the Delhi Govt and its Mtn1sters also JOin us_ But for a Mintster to 1nst1gate Police to violate the law and .
people's liberties and rights. to ask the police to approve of and bless mob violence against African people, is totally .
unacceptable_ .
The Delhi CM should have met the African women who complained of racism, v1olence and humiliation. He should have . accepted that in this particular Instance, the Delhi Police were perfectly right not to ratd wtthout a warrant, and to protect the Afncan nationals from mob v1olence He should have inittated a proper 1mpart1al probe and awa1ted 1ts results before rush1ng to defend his Minister's actions .
Instead, the Delhi CM defended the actions with the bizarre claim that 'Rape tendencies start with drug and sex rae kets ' http:Ilwww.ndtv.com/video/player/news/am id-anaer-over-oang-rape-kej riwa 1-blam es-delhi-police/ 305557?curl= 1389989510. And he and his Cabinet have announced that they will hold a sit-in demanding suspension of the Delhi Poltce officers who refused to do the Minister's bidding .
It 1s ironic that the rape of a Danish woman tn Delhi is recognised as violence agatnst a woman -a foreign guest in our country_ But the violence and appalling violation of rights to which African woman were subJected isn't recognised by the Delhi Government as the same -and is even defended in the name of fighting 'rape tendencies'' .
We cannot forget that an African student, Yannick Nihangaza from Burundi, was brutally attacked in 2012 in Jallandhar, Punjab, going into a coma from which he emerged after nine months. There have been growing instances of xenophobia, racism and v1olence aga1nst Africans in Goa and other parts of the country too. People from the North East states also experience racist prejud1ce and violence regularly in Delhi and elsewhere. We urgent.Jy feel the need to counter the spread of the racist virus in the capital city. .
AISA appeals to the student community to join a SIT-IN at Jantar Mantar, on Sunday 19 January from 12 noon: .
,-To ask that the judicial probe ordered by the Lieutenant Governor identify those responsible for instigating .
and perpetrating mob violence against African nationals, including African women in Khidki village. To .
d_emand that those guilty of such violence be punished. .
To strongly counter racist hate-speech of the Law Minister .
To strongly resist the racist propaganda that ,all Africans are drug peddlers' .
> To tell the Delhi Govt that the Delhi Police cops who protected Africans from mob violence and refused to .
raid without search warrant, must not be suspended. Delhi Police should be held accountable to the law .
and to the Constitution, not to the bidding of political leaders .
To strongly say 'Not in our ~ame': to assert that profiling of and violence against African women will not .
make Indian women any safer from rape; to tell the Delhi CM to stop using rape as a pretext to defend .
racism .
,.' To create a space for African nationals in Delhi to share their experiences. To tell the people of Delhi that .
Africans 'bilkul hum aur aap jaise hi hain' (are just like you and me) .
