A sunset seen from the base of Prospect Hill Tower in Somerville MA.

A rainbow over Somerville! After taking this picture I headed up to a nearby view spot to try for a better photo, but the rainbow was gone by the time I got there.

Needed to brighten it up a bit

Throughout the foothills of the plateaus along the Queensland Gold Coast hinterlands people live in houses tucked away in bush and farmland. They light up every evening, a pretty site itself, but sometimes augmented the colour of the setting sun. This image features Mt Somerville and its Air Services Australia communications dome which controls air traffic in the air space for both Gold Coast and Brisbane Airports.

Communications Tower operated by Air Services Australia for the nearby Gold Coast Airport with local residences in the evening light. The Queensland — New South Wales border runs left to right just this side of the dome.

I love the colors of the houses in Somerville, and maybe winter is actually the best time to photograph them when the trees have lost their leaves and are less in the way. Managed to also catch this one without a car in front, a rare occurrence. IPhone 6s.

Twisting through the reverse curves connecting the main to the mine loadout, this train of 100 hoppers will load on a balloon track behind me.

Somerville mine once loaded 3-4 trains each day, but as coal buying power plants changed their contracts and reserves diminished, the sole remaining train you could count on was the 5-days a week train for IP&L Petersburg station. It loaded at Somerville for many years before switching to neighboring Wild Boar mine at Lynnville as Somerville mine would down operations. The mine closed around 2020 and only an inactive loop track remains, everything else having been razed.

A couple months ago, there was a day with fascinating clouds passing over. Once I noticed, I headed up to the nearest view spot (Prospect Hill Park), but it was changing so fast! It was one of those days where I wished I'd known ahead of time to get in position for a timelapse and had a good camera with me. But, at least I got some snapshots with my phone.

After spending the day working Peabody, Pan Am train BO-1 has just crossed over the Mystic River in Somerville, MA and is about to tie down near BET. MEC 381 (ex-SCL GP40) and MEC 345 (ex-PC GP40) were the power today.

An inbound Downeaster rolls south into Boston cabbage-first, passing the suburb of Somerville. In a few short minutes, they'll arrive at North Station.

There's some more snow in the forecast for this week! It keeps coming and going every time I check the weather forecast, but it looks like Thursday and Saturday at least have a decent chance of photogenic snow... wish me luck!

Memorial day was the 79th annual Tour of Somerville, one of the oldest professional bicycle races in the USA. The tour is a 50 mile race (40 for the women) that brings competitors from around the world. It is a rain or shine event. This year it was raining, making it more interesting from a spectator viewpoint (though there were few spectators in the rain this year). I'm pretty sure the riders would have preferred dry conditions

The above pro bicycle is made of carbon fiber and weighs between 15-17 pounds, compared too about 25 pounds for a standard road bike. The cost for this bike is around $15.000 dollars, and if it falls (along with the rider) in an accident, the frame will likely be damaged beyond repair.

I explored Tuft's University after visiting nearby Ball Square in Somerville today, in search of a good vista. I found it at a nice plaza, though it was circled with tall glass panels. I had to find a high spot on a planter to set up my tripod. I then experimented with different aperture and polarizing filter settings.

It's really hard to frame photos of houses with cars, power lines, etc in the way, but the paint jobs around here are just amazing.

I'm going to have to figure out a way to take better photos of these houses. I'd like to make a mosaic of all the colorful paint jobs, but its so hard to get a good angle.

It looked like there was a really good sunset last night, but it is endlessly frustrating to try to find a place to see it in Somerville, where everything is two stories tall. I failed to plan ahead and go somewhere else an hour before sunset, so I basically missed it. Maybe I need a drone (but I'm a little scared of the idea of flying one in populated areas...)

I'm still trying to find good nearby sunset view spots in Somerville. Can you recommend a tall building or hilltop?

What was once the Somerville Savings Bank is now a Sushi Palace (which is an awesome sushi restaurant) located on the corner of Division Street. All that remains of the bank is the deteriorated sign on the façade and the obvious bank vault in the restaurant.

Located in Somerville, Massachusetts the Somerville Theater was built in 1914.
