At Dartington Glass near Torrington you can press your hands or feet into sand and then they pour on molten glass to make a cast of your prints. This is my son's hand print. After pouring, the top surface of the glass has a pouring mark that is removed by re-heating the glass to melt it and ensure the glass flows until fully flat.

Gore Canyon. View near its mouth, looking down. The Colorado River here makes its first entry of the canyon, flowing quietly and smoothly through the upturned beds of sandstone that lie up against the more massive rocks of the canyon proper. Grand County, Colorado. 1874. (Stereoscopic view)

Things don't always go as smooth as we'd like, unfortunately. (It's a song. Click on it.) The image I've been wanting to do for my next 52 Week self-portrait is now a no-go (so you get to enjoy a quick—kinda sorta—abstract for now). I was able to download the necessary freeware for the effect I wanted to create in that next 52 Week image, but there's some free software from Apple that I can't use. And why not? Because Apple has become increasingly like Microsoft. To get what I need, I hafta buy a new freakin' computer, and that ain't happenin'. They can kiss my micro-processor before I do that. The only way I'll cough up the green for a new 'puter is if I get the job in Atlanta (and even then I still may not fork out that kinda dough). Until then, I'm stickin' wi' my faithful little iBook. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. The next 52 Week image was to be the first in that series I had promised not long ago, so I'm having to come up with a new idea to go with what I had in mind.

Received my Federal Tax refund the other day. Nice fat chunk of change, too. So, I've been doing a little shopping. I'm probably making it more difficult than I need to, but I'm having difficulty trying to decide which flash I wanna buy. Some Canon freaks I've talked to don't have good things to say about Canon's own flashes, so I've been looking at others. Recent news about Vivitar having been bought by Sakar makes me hesitant about their model that I'd thought of getting. I've read testimonials by Vivitar owners saying that Sakar isn't supporting Vivitar's old flashes. Makes no sense to me, but when these people are quoting conversations they've had with Sakar company reps it just makes me say, "Um, no. I'll look elsewhere, thank you very much." I don't know how reliable this is, but I've read one testimonial that the Sunpak I'm interested in might have problems working with the Canon 50D. Yesterday, though, I came across a model by Metz that looks to be really nice (the manual control of its power output has 25 levels ranging from 1/1 to 1/256th, and it'll also work with every f/Stop known to man, plus a few others not yet discovered). However, it's about as pricey as the Canons. See? Nothin' ain't quite as smooth as you'd like it to be.

This, though, is smooth! However, it's best enjoyed in a darkened room, so that you can really see all the subtle gradations along the top. Took some patience and time futzing with Curves and Levels in Photoshop to keep that strip of light along the top from going completely black, and without that little splotch of colour beneath the bright strip from looking all posterized.

Beyond that, today is a beautiful pre-Spring day here in the DC Metropolitan area, with about 4 inches of snow on the ground! Woohoo! I love snow! 'Bout damned time we got a decent snow fall. In a couple of days, though, they say we'll be back up around 50℉ (10℃), and temperatures like that will melt all that gorgeous snow. ~POUTS!~ I need to move north, not south.

Saw John from Bridge City speak at IDSA so I just had to check out his showroom. This is a powerless table saw. It's amazing and totally smooth. John did some demos with me, let me try my hand at it (it's incredible) as well as gave me some great advice on how to start and run my own business.
